I’ve been wondering—can poker really be taken as a full-time career? Some players say it offers freedom, big earning potential, and personal growth, while others warn about variance, mental stress, and unstable income.

Personally, I feel it could work if someone has strong bankroll management, discipline, and keeps learning every day. But it seems very different from a regular job with fixed salary and stability.

What do you all think? Is it realistic to play poker as a career, or should it remain a side income / hobby?

Arguments “for”

Skill, not just luck

Unlike casino games, poker is a game with incomplete information, where success largely depends on mathematical analysis, psychology, and strategy.

Long-term results are determined by skill level, not luck.

Financial potential

Major international tournaments (wsop, EPT) offer tens of millions of dollars in prize money.

Successful online poker players earn a steady income by playing multiple tables simultaneously.

Flexible schedule

Professional players choose when and how much to play.

It can be combined with other activities.

❌ Arguments “against”

High risk

Even strong players face downswings (streaks of bad luck) that can last for months.

Without discipline and bankroll management, a player risks losing everything.

Stress and instability

Poker requires emotional stability: constant fluctuations in wins and losses can be psychologically stressful.

There is no guaranteed income, as in a regular job.

Social and legal restrictions

In some countries, poker is restricted by law or considered gambling.

Players may face misunderstanding from their families and society.

⚖️ Conclusion

Poker can indeed become a profession, but only for highly disciplined, mathematically savvy, and stress-resistant players who are willing to invest time in training and analysis. For most people, poker remains a hobby or a source of additional income, rather than a primary profession.

Yes, poker can be a career, but it’s not an easy one. Unlike traditional jobs, poker offers no guaranteed salary, no benefits, and comes with huge variance—meaning even skilled players can lose for weeks or months. To succeed professionally, you need not only strong technical skills but also bankroll management, emotional discipline, and the ability to keep studying as the game evolves. Many pros treat it like running a business: tracking results, investing in coaching, and maintaining strict routines. The freedom, travel, and potential earnings can be attractive, but the lifestyle is demanding, often stressful, and not suited for everyone. Poker can absolutely be a career path, but it requires resilience, adaptability, and a mindset prepared for uncertainty.

Yes, ofc it can be, but it's not easiest path, you know.

In order to comfortably sit somewhere in south east Asia, playing poker and making $1000+ you'll have to study and work hard, play a lot, and you'll still fight dispersion, having downswings etc.

You'll probably need a backing, and if you have backing it becomes like job, you'll have to play a big amount games every month, and give large piece of pie to you backers, tho you'll have less risks

It's complicated...

I think it all depends primarily on you and your motivation. If your motivation to play and make money is strong enough, then you have a chance to become a professional, provided that you are willing to work hard and persistently. Professional poker is hard, very hard work. Not everyone is ready to make such sacrifices, and not everyone can be patient and disciplined enough.

Seeing this topic makes me think about the difference between career and job. There are some players who were team online pro and have benefits from it, it's hard to say it's not a career

Unless you are some asocial idiot savant or somewhere on the autism spectrum, you can earn MUCH more money in other jobs than online poker if you are smart enough to be able to beat it over micro stakes online.

Live poker is still pretty soft, so you can grind a good profit if you are good and can read people (and don't give off tells yourself).

But a smart person trying to be a professional poker player online in the year 2025 - that is just the opposite of smart.

Is it possible? Of course it is.
Is it easy? No. It's harder than almost any other career. In fact, I think being profitable with sports betting is even easier than being profitable with poker.

Yes, it can be, but it’s not an easy path. Some people do make a living from poker, but it requires discipline, constant study, emotional control, and a strong financial cushion to deal with the inevitable downswings. Unlike a regular job, income isn’t guaranteed, so you need to treat it like running a business—tracking results, managing bankroll carefully, and always improving your skills. For most people, poker works best as a hobby or a side activity, but for a small group with dedication and resilience, it can indeed become a career

First, speaking of the bankroll, I believe that if you don't have a bankroll, the solution is to play for a team. We have selections and openings almost year-round.

When you make a living from poker, there's no way to relate it to your normal work at a company, but to conduct it professionally, choosing tournaments, sites, schedules, days of the week, along with breaks and studying, are essential. For the professional side, you need to draw up a plan and follow a well-organized path strategy, relying on some support from friends and such to discuss the stages, as well as participating in a community, like we have here on cardschat.

I'm recovering from a serious health problem and plan to switch to poker....

It can be, but it’s unstable. You need financial reserves and must be prepared for variance swings

Yes, but you have to study as any other career, people think that poker is just luck and they’re wrong.

Yes, I have a friend who dropped out of college to study and play poker. Today he lives off the sport and lives well. However, you have to advise daily study with the gameplay.

Absolutely, poker can be a career, but it's definitely not easy. It requires discipline, bankroll management, study, and the ability to handle swings without tilting. Some people do make a living from it, especially pros who grind cash games or tournaments consistently, but it's important to treat it like a business rather than just a hobby.

I confess that I'm making the most of my time off; I can't do much due to an injury to my right eye.
And I'm planning a career change, dropping everything and focusing solely on poker.
I participate in another Brazilian poker community, which has some really cool challenges and studies with drills for each type of situation we study.
The career mode in this group is a guide to achieving your goals...
So I'm pretty confident, but I still need to have at least enough money to support me for at least one to two years...
I even thought about creating a thread here to use as a diary of this process...
Besides going back to studying the study program here on the forum, studying it first.

I do not know what the percentage is but very few make a professional career from it. But if your making a fair bit you are on your way. If you can think you can make enough to live off and succeed you are a professional but you do not want to try making the switch if you are not profitable enough to rely on it for income.

For the average player, building a career in poker is not worth it. Very few players will be able to do this, that's my opinion.
