I think the high (functionally infinite) skill ceiling is most of the reason it's still fun. I don't think I'm "doing" anything to keep it fun other than trying to genuinely improve.

For me: Yes and No.

As long as the games were easy and you could earn some pretty good money playing full-time, it was fun most of the time.

When you had to play almost a full working day just to earn around 1000 dollars a month, it was no longer fun to spend so much time for so little money, so I quit playing online to earn money.
