As long as it is 9-handed and at the beginning of a tournament I don't think is too tight.

what would you say is optimal VPIP so as to not be playing too many hands/being exploitable?

Can anyone tell me what an average VPIP for MTTs would be? I'm falling in the 14-18% range and I feel like I may be playing too tight...
You have a great VPIP. I saw some guys who had an 30%-50% of VPIP and some who had less than 10%.

Both are playing wrong.

The first is playing more hands than the necessary (this is clearly a lose type player). This is expensive. They probably will not be able to play at the finals of a tournament...

The second should be playing more hands than they are (this is clearly a tight type of player). This, also, is expensive, because tournament, generally, have a thing called by "ante" (a small part of your stack will go to the pot, even if you folded your turn on pre-flop). And, also, they are probably losing positions as they don't raises their stacks in the tournament (they will be short stack at the mid-end game and, then, they will need to shove all of their good hands and pray for victory).

I never look at my VPIP - there are days when good combinations come one after another, high pairs, suited connectors,Ax suited etc. you can't ignore them just because it will exceed yours VPIP. I focus on opening ranges and at the same time try to check my actions in GTO programs - this way I am sure that I am not making unnecessary openings.

I play mostly cash games, and my VPIP does not exceed 23%, and when I play in tournaments, it reaches 27%. It may seem too high to some, but for me it's the best strategy, I play aggressively, sometimes even too much, so I get eliminated from tournaments quickly😂.

1) 1rst rules - Tight is right ;)
But there are cases when the opponent opens too much, then you can add significantly more hands to the range!

In order to win tournaments we need to VPIP higher than 18% as an average-
The way you increase your VPIP correctly is :
1 Get hand tracking software- Hand2note has a solid free version but paying for PT4 is worth it as well
2 sign up for the free version of GTOWIZARD- or pay for it if you can afford it

Then review you MTT hand histories not just tagged hands but all hands that you could have VPIP'd and see how far from GTO you are
What you will notice very quickly is that you are missing some spots that are obvious- That may increase you VPIP up to 20-22%
Then you will see less obvious but still profitable spots that will increase you VPIP to 25% or greater

A great feature in GTOWIZ is the ability to look at the EV of opening feel free to not open 0 EV spots and you may even decide to not open spots below .1 EV and still you will increase your VPIP

UTG 8 handed 50bb opens 17.7% of hands you are suggesting you have an average VPIP of less than a UTG 50bb GTO open range for all positions
You are not winning pots you should be winning in MTT's because you are not in them
50 bb stack HJ opens 29.6%
UTG at 100bb is opening 16.5% -UTG 20bb 17.2% - I think this clearly shows that your VPIP is low for MTT play
BTN open 100bb 55.9%-50bb 54%-20bb 46%
BB VPIPs 53% of hands vs a UTG OPN at 50bb -79% vs BTN opn- 50% vs UTG opn BTN flat

All this data for free from GTOWIZ
