Do you think it’s better to register early and grind from the start, or join freerolls late with a short stack and try to double up quickly? I usually register early but sometimes it feels like wasted time if I bust early.

I think it's better to register at the start. Great hands don't come along that often so the more chances of getting one the better. While I see people entering late and shoving a few hands to gain position, I don't have that kind of luck.

For freerolls in particular, it might be better to register early. I see so many people register and sit out and you can just pick up those chips. Some never come back. And that some extra free chips. Tournaments with higher buy ins I late reg but not super late reg. I try to avoid those early bad beats. I find if you're deep, how much can you really raise with aces so that 9 10 suited doesn't follow and crack your aces? There's really no amount you can raise. Actually if you raise too much you're telling them you have a high pair and any suited connectors will call hoping to crack your hand.

I think this depends on the type of player that you are. I like starting early, but I've seen that even if I gie u AA in the first 3hands it's difficult to really cause damage to your opponents because the blinds are small, if you raise too big, people will get suspicious and run (fold). If you mine raise, okay someone might connect but still it's difficult to stack people early on. I've started registereing late and it's a whole ball game, the aggression, stealing of blinds etc, that's what I enjoy doing and it's very easy to double/triple up if you just wait for the right spot

For freeroll early. It's not that uncommon to pick up AA/AK/KK/QQ in one of your early hands and if you go all in there's a good chance you'll get a couple of people calling you. I've started freerolls that way with 2, 3 or even 4x your initial chip amount, and that really makes a difference. Obviously you'll bust sometimes but then you save time. Plus, you can limp-call cheap early and hope for a lucky flush/straight/fullhouse and many people will play any hand against you.

Personally, I always register for a tournament just a minute before late registration closes. I’ve noticed that this way it’s easier for me to make it into the money

I am not a huge fan of late registration on tournaments not only free rolls. I mean by the time you join, the bbs would have increased and there can already be couple of stack leaders in your table. This will in turn will make your position cautious as you can’t even open hands without the best of the best possible. Stack leaders by then would simply bully you with 3 bets, C bets and what not.. so always, join any tournaments as early as you can and build up your chips from the beginning and ‘be’ that stack leader who bullies late joiners. 😎

At start is the best, some people aren’t sitted down, you play more hands and no rush yourself against big blinds

In theory the later you join , the more bad players will be eliminated already .

i think if you join earlier theres more chance to take out fish, if you join later you only really increase by luck instead of waiting for a strong hand

I think it's a good idea to burn a few minutes of late registration before joining. Maybe until level 3 or 4. That way, many of the maniacs will have already left, and you'll still have time to play a low-blind game and wait for good hands to try to at least double your stack. If you join in the final minutes, you only have one or two bullets to fire, and you might not be lucky enough to get the hand before the blinds swallow you up.

If you're into late register, I suggest to do it in the lower buyins of your ABI, many times you will bust trying to double up, so it's better to be your lower ones.

Also, if it's a knockout mtt, you don't want to enter with less than 40bb.

You have more chance of building a stack by registering early in the tournament

Depends on the money/prize range, if they are the same/ a qualifier then a late register put you closer to the money, if there is a big/good different between the bubble and first then the later you register mean the big the stacks you will face.

Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too. I have been in both types of tourneys.
One where I register early and like a poster said, you can pick up easy chips with only you or one other person present on a 9 person table.

And other tournaments that have late entry for 3 hours and if you just register at the 2 hr 40 minute mark, you can money if you last 6 hands. The only downside to this technique is I have missed free money by registering too late. For example, tourney pays top 36 players with 3 hour late registration. . I go to register at the normal 2 hr 40 minute mark. Well, at the 2 hr 36 minute mark and I get ready to enter but the tourney had 32 players remaining. So registration automatically closed when the remaining players went under 36 players, which happened at thr 2 hr 33 minute mark. Opportunity missed, I can't enter the tournament as late registration ended even before the 3 hour mark due to 36 or less players remaining.

Joining the game 1-2 hours after the tournament starts allows you to sit down at the table fresh, not tired from several dozen hands. This advantage is more relevant to professionals who play multi-hour sessions on many tables and strive to achieve the maximum advantage.
The main disadvantage of entering a tournament late is the missed opportunities to play against frankly weak opponents who gather at the tables at the start of the event.
These are mainly amateurs, as well as players who were able to qualify for the tournament through satellites.

It depends a lot on how you play with few blinds, but in most freerolls the blinds change quickly so I don't see much advantage in entering the MLR.

I use late registration due to lack of time. I believe around 20-30 big blinds is where you can improve your luck because you'll reach the push or fold stage faster. If you're a skilled player, it's better to play deep stacked.
