Cash or tournaments for starting out in poker? Looking for guidance

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to poker and still figuring out where I fit best. I've played some cash games and even made a bit of money, but honestly, I feel like it was more luck than skill. I don't yet have a solid strategy or deep understanding of the game.

For those of you with more experience—would you recommend starting out with tournaments or sticking to cash games while I learn? I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance you can share. Thanks in advance!

Freeroll tourneys are quite good to practice normally for (small) real money without risks (a luxury cash games do not have), but MTTs are in general far more complex from the standpoint of the amount of theory you need to learn, while the cash games are just pure poker in it's essence. But for the same reason the cash game field is stronger AFAIK as you have lower entry barrier in MTTs to perform relatively well. So depends on your personal preference and if you'd rather have to master less skills to a better degree, or to study more different skills but with easier entry per each.

I think both cash games and tournaments can be great for learning, but they teach you different skills. Cash games are usually better for practicing fundamentals like hand selection, bet sizing, and understanding ranges, because you can always reload and keep playing. They also tend to have less variance, so it’s easier to track your progress.

Tournaments, on the other hand, are more about adapting to changing stack sizes, ICM pressure, and survival. They can be exciting and rewarding, but they also require patience since you might play for hours without a big result. For a beginner, this can sometimes feel frustrating, but it’s still valuable experience.

Another good option is to play freerolls. They don’t cost anything, but they give you real experience with tournament structures and the chance to practice against many players. It’s a safe way to build confidence and maybe even a small bankroll without risking money.

If I were starting out, I’d probably mix cash games for fundamentals, freerolls for practice and fun, and sprinkle in some low buy-in tournaments once I feel more comfortable. That way you get the best of all formats and can later decide which one you enjoy most.

Las partidas de cash suelen ser mejores para practicar fundamentos como la selección de manos, el tamaño de las apuestas y la comprensión de los rangos, porque siempre puedes recargar y seguir jugando. Además, suelen tener menos varianza, por lo que es más fácil seguir tu progreso.

Los torneos, por otro lado, se centran más en adaptarse a los cambios en el tamaño de las pilas, la presión del ICM y la supervivencia. Pueden ser emocionantes y gratificantes, pero también requieren paciencia, ya que podrías jugar durante horas sin obtener un gran resultado. Para un principiante, esto a veces puede resultar frustrante, pero aun así es una experiencia valiosa.

Otra buena opción son los freerolls. No cuestan nada, pero te dan experiencia real con las estructuras de los torneos y la oportunidad de practicar contra muchos jugadores. Es una forma segura de ganar confianza y quizás incluso un pequeño bankroll sin arriesgar dinero.

Si estuviera empezando, probablemente combinaría partidas de dinero real para los fundamentos, freerolls para practicar y divertirse, y añadiría algunos torneos de entrada baja cuando me sienta más cómodo. Así, aprovechas al máximo todos los formatos y luego puedes decidir cuál disfrutas más.

Okay, I understand. Well, freerolls are what I've played the most, and the truth is that it hasn't been that bad for me. In several of them, I have reached the award positions. There comes a point where blind people start to consume me, and I despair with the first decent hand I can get. The farthest I have come was to second place in a tournament with 3000 people. At that time I thought I was getting better, but sometimes I didn't even get to the prizes, and I got frustrated again, thinking it was just luck.

Yes, but I feel that inertia affects me more in regular games. I notice when I'm inertia, but I just can't control it. I feel like I need to recover quickly, and sometimes the system betrays me too much and makes things worse. In the tournaments, I would say that I have been a little luckier, since I have reached the prize positions in several. Sure, being freerolls, I haven't won much, but I feel like I've made progress, right? Before, in those freerolls, I wasn't even close to reaching the prize bubble... haha.
