I’m trying to build my bankroll mostly from freerolls and low buy-ins. In your opinion, which poker room offers the best mix of traffic, freerolls, and softer games for beginners?

Don't expect to learn poker from freerolls, though. Just deposit some money and start playing, it's much faster. You will make a few cents per week or month, depending how much you play ( from freerolls, that is).

Of course, I also started with freerolls (888). Real poker, which raises the adrenaline level, is playing for money. Today, from time to time I play in freerolls (mainly CC), but my main game is cash games and tournaments for medium stakes.

I strongly agree with this. If its just about getting some experience and learning the fundamentals of the game without risking any money, then play money cash tables are much better for this than freerolls, because they run all the time. On pokerstars you can practice on play money tables using the exact same software and features as on regular tables. You can even use auto top-up and a HUD (tracker), if you want to.

So essentially the play money tables on PokerStars can be seen as 0NL, and then the next level up is 2NL, where you can go as soon as you feel, you got the basics sorted out and money for a first deposit of say $50. Trying to earn those $50 for a starting bankroll by playing freerolls is a total waste of time, even if you live in a low or mid income country, as OP seem to do.

888 is great for a small bankroll. They have lots of freerolls and micro stakes satellites. You can start cash games at 1 cents/2 cents once you have enough buy ins.

888 cash games for small stakes. The rake is one of the highest and it will kill you. There are better rooms for very small stakes.

GGPoker provides daily freebuys for 0.25$ Spins or 0.25$ Mystery Battle royal.

You can make like 5-10$/month from those.

But generally the best is to have access to private freerolls, search different groups or sites like CC who make a lot of freerolls.

You won't build a bankroll playing 2500 people tournament with 50-100-200$ prizes
