This was a few weeks ago already, but I cant see, that anyone was shared it, so I am going to do it. 6-handed on the final table there was a situation, where the eventual winner did not see - or pretended to not see - UTG open to 2,25BB. He therefore attempted to raise to 3,0BB from SB, which is a normal sizing to use from that specific seat.

A raise from 2,25 to 3,0 BB is not a legal raise, so the floor was called over, and SB was forced to make a minimum raise to 2,25 + 1,25 = 3,5BB. BB folded, but the betting was now reopened for UTG, who took advantage of the situation - or so he thought - and 4-bet jammed with QJs for 30BB into SBs AKs. AKs held, and UTG was busted in 6. place.

Apparently part of the poker community have strong feelings about this hand and believe, that SB did a very unethical angle shot. I dont know either of these players, and I dont have any personal opinion about them. Nor do I know, if SB actually missed the action, or if he did this intentionally to induce a shove from UTG. So I will just give my general take, which is, that even if you think, someone was forced to 3-bet, because they missed the action, nobody force you to 4-bet jam QJs from UTG for 30BB.

Actually if you really think, it was a mistake, and you have strong opinions about ethics, then you probably should not try to take advantage of that mistake but just call the extra 1,25BB and play a pot in position. So in my opinion, weather SB made an honest mistake or a dirty angle, UTG kind of did this to himself and had no reason to be mad at the player, who busted him.

And while its obviously not great, if everyone do things on purpose, that require the floor to be called over, it is also a part of live poker to try to deceive your opponents. So if this is super unethical, should we then also frawn upon "reverse live tells", speech play, hollywooding and so on and so forth? In my opinion live players need to protect themselfes by not relying so much on "tells" but simply sticking to fundamentally sound poker. And once again nobody forced UTG to 4-bet ship a hand as weak as QJs for 30BB.

That's a really really far stretch of an angle shot if that's what it was.

Roflmfao. Dude isn't only very flexible with his UTG....QJs jam with 30bb, That's very flexible mental gymnastics in trying to explain away a moronic play as an angle shot.

Cheers!!!

I think something similar happened with Daniel Negreanu. I'll try to find the hand.

Dude tried to take advantage of what he thought was an honest mistake and almost starts to cry when his steal does not workout as pleased lol 😆

Highly doubt someone would put himself in such a bad spot on a big ft by giving his opponent such a good price to play against him in position. It's not like he had aces there.

Yeah, I think that was the hand I was thinking about.
And as in this hand, even if he believed, that DNEG had "misclicked" and intended to put in 9k rather than 45k, nobody forced him to 3-bet jam KJs for almost 100BB. Obviously calling is kind of awkward, because then he is out of position in a bloated pot. But then he could just have folded and moved on to the next hand. Shipping in 100BB preflop with KJs is not a standard play, so in that hand as well the "victim" kind of did it to himself.

Another proof that there is no karma. He ended up winning the tournament after doing that.

Totally agree. I think Daniel didn't really misclick and was hoping for his opponent to try and take advantage of his "error". Not sure about the EPT guy. But yeah, in both cases their opponents were 100% responsible for their actions.

Interesting story. I haven't heard of that situation before.

I've never really played live but it also happened to me that I thought I first raised from a late position while it was actually a minimum 3-bet. Of course in online poker, you cannot make impossible 3-bet sizes such as in live but just goes to show you can do something unintentional when you don't pay attention.

And I agree with most posters in here that UTG tried to be greedy here (due to regular opening ranges of SB) but he eventually choked on his greedyness 😅

Not to mention the situation, where it folds to you in SB with a 30 BB stack near the bubble, and BB is sitting on a short stack like 9BB. So to apply pressure on him you decide to jam with a really bad hand, because you think, he will fold, unless he look down at an absolute monster. BB does fold, and only then do you discover, that someone with a 35BB stack had already limped, and that player now makes the call and bust you from the tournament :)

Legal side: legality of raise
- Raising from 2.25BB to 3.0BB is indeed not considered legal, since the minimum raise must be at least the size of the previous raise — i.e. 2.25 + 1.25 = 3.5BB.
- Judging by the description, the dealer or tournament director correctly intervened, and the SB was forced to make a correct raise.

Ethical aspect: mistake or angle shot?
- If the SB really did not notice the UTG raise, it is just a mistake, and it can happen to anyone, especially in live poker, where there are many distractions.
- If he intentionally pretended not to notice in order to provoke UTG to outplay, this is already angle shooting, that is, an attempt to use technical loopholes or an opponent's oversight to his advantage. This is considered unethical, but not always a violation of the rules.
