I think they both have their place.

Play money was a great way for me to learn and practice. I did it for quite some time as I was very apprehensive about using my own money to play poker. I did try once or twice with $20 back when there was a Poket Tournament Indicator deal to sweeten the pot.

It was only after grinding $100 in freerolls and using the tools on CC Forums that I really started taking poker seriously. I have not gone back to play money since then. Although I do intend to fool around with the replay Bust the Staff Tournament from time to time.

It goes without saying that people do crazy things when using play money, so you never really get good training until real money is used.

When I returned to playing poker after many years off, I decided to try playing on ClubWpt (mainly their Sit n Gos) to test if my knowledge was decent enough. I won quite a lot but soon learned that the site had many drawbacks. I then decided to rejoin CardsChat and try their freerolls and have won enough on WPT Global to play their Global Spins (with a $25 win) and to play in their micro ring fast forward games.
As a result, my choice is to play fast forward cash games, maybe some freerolls with few players to build a bankroll or win cash, but forget about play money games.

Play money nowadays sound stupid to me . It's for kids or fun players to pretend the poker players play and kill time while at work or whatever lol . I hate fake play money sites .

The good thing about fictitious money is that you can use it to improve your game,... learn from the mistakes you make using real money because if you lose it it wouldn't affect your economy like it happens when you play with real money

For the beginners, play money is very useful in order to they get used to the environment of the poker site, amount of bets, the rules etc. Once they get used to it they may jump to the real money. That happened to me, and today I go 99% to the real one cuz sometimes I go play money one for fun and feed my subconscious with the probabilities.

Play money is the heaven of calling stations. I don’t advocate this impotent form of poker. But if you want to train multi-way post flop play play money has its merits. In real poker most pots are heads-up battles though.

Real money, of course you should start at levels you feel comfortable with. Personally, I like to start in a new room trying out the free tournaments and then, if you consider it appropriate, make a deposit.

Maybe play money is good at the very beginning, when you're just learning. But of course real money is, because you have an incentive to play and do.

Before I ever transferred money anywhere (which was a shame), I played with play money, but it didn't make much sense because everyone was playing mindlessly, going all-in on every hand. The best solution is to start with freerolls and move on to paid tournaments with the money you win in freerolls.

I think there is play money only so that a beginner who does not understand how the site works at all can get acquainted with the functionality and get the first experience without the risk of losing their money.
