Now I am learning to play poker and only play online. Is it significantly different online from offline?

In large offline tournaments the structure is much better than in any online tournament. Considering the weak-average level of players, it is often more profitable to play tighter here than online. The most important difference, in my opinion. All good players teach us to think in ranges, not in specific cards of the opponent. In live poker, this is not entirely true. Against good players who can balance their range, this is certainly correct advice, but in live poker there are too many players against whom you can narrow your range to one specific combination.

In my opinion, online and live poker are simply two different games. But if you play well online, your chances of good results in a live game will be much higher.

online poker is like playing football on a computer. The offline atmosphere and communication are just two different games.

I think the major 2 differences are - There are not "live" tells online, and you see way more hands online than live per hour.

Obviously yes. Other than the facts pointed out by others, like live tells and dynamics, and volume of hands, live games are generally played for far more money, and this in itself makes a big difference. In live poker bad players can often be pushed around, because they cant afford to rebuy, if you bust them, when they call your $200 river bet. But online nobody gives a shit about losing $2, which makes the cheapest games all about getting max value, when you are likely to have the best hand.

imo, No not as much as many will suggest. Also, 'live tells' are really over-rated imo. When I first went to play at bigger venue live setting, I spent so much time on studying 'tells', both physical & verbal. OMG what a huge waste of time that was.

One of the biggest differences that I have noticed in NLHE Tournament play is the players are MUCH MUCH WORSE than I could've ever imagined. When playing in a live tournament it feels like I'm playing amongst a lot of the folks who suggest that online poker is rigged... loads of fundamental errors.

There are some differences, in live you can see the player's reaction, in online there is no way, and in online you have the option to play more tournaments which is less boring

The game is not that different…it is a matter of preference. Yes, it is possible to play several tables, cash or tournament or a combination thereof, but live poker is more social and relaxing. Live tells are not the huge bonus some players think they are…if my face turns red, I swallow hard and my pupils dilate, is it because I have an absolute monster hand or that I’m bluffing…the physical reactions will be the same…how many players can distinguish between the two?

The game strategy, tactics and general game moments are the same in these two types of poker. But the feeling of the game and the emotions you get in live poker will never compare with online poker. Online poker has its own advantage - it is that you can play anywhere, for example at home or somewhere on the road and you can play at several poker tables at the same time, although to be honest I don’t really like doing this, since I don’t have time to understand what is happening at each of the tables and I make decisions automatically, and very often these decisions are not thought out. But in order to understand what real poker is, you need to try to play live poker at least once. The feelings you get there cannot be described in words, you need to feel it. When I started playing poker, I only played live poker, but now I play online, simply because at the moment it is more convenient for me to play at home lying on the couch than to go somewhere.

Online games, fast and dynamic. Playing online you can play 2, 3, 4 or even more tables at the same time. I think if you play live, it will be difficult to play more than one table at a time. Especially if you take into account that in online games there are hyper tournaments where in fact most players play with all hands in a row. So I think the difference between online and live games is quite big.

The big things you need to be aware of are:

Firstly online poker games are a lot cheaper and more accessible than live games. You’ll struggle to find $1 games live (therefore the value is less to players and can mean they play loser

You see A LOT more hands online than live - I think it’s about 3 x more so 20 hands live in an hour would be 60 hands per hour online. Now this makes a difference when it comes to noticing bad beats, People think bad beats happen more often online and in micro games (say up to $11 games). I think people play loser and probably have less skill than those playing smaller games live but statistically hand for hand if you compared youd see the same probabilities of hands winning/losing. You just see it more often so feel like it’s happening more.

bankroll management can be harder for some people online as well as tracking your wins/losses - it can be very easy to let it take over your life. To start I would set yourself a budget; plan out maybe weekly what you want to play and when and stick to it. It can be easy to go on a bad run and get knocked out of a game and jump in another without even thinking - also be aware of how long tournaments are expected to last especially mid week if you have work the next morning because when it gets deep and you realise it’s 4 am that maybe $100 top prize might not seem as worth it lol

If you are someone who takes beats personally or plays emotionally turn off the animations - I hate them anyway - I can just imagine some online player turning up at a casino armed with eggs to throw at folk

On that note don’t expect good etiquette online or any. Don’t expect people to play any particular way. Just don’t react to their play badly don’t call light don’t limp AA and let the BB hit a flush with 53s and get mad play every hand independently not with a grudge, and have patience. Keep an eye on the lobby, make the right plays based on where you are, Don’t lose patience don’t marry blinds or pocket 22s be aware of how the hands play out, watch the hands your not in, be aware of your table perception and have the ability to switch it up.

To me a live game is a night out; I think I play tighter because if you go out that’s it for the night your sat watching - this can be boring with how slow the hands are hence why you see a lot more limping. Playing live you have to put in your own blinds and antes and be on that, and be clear with any action you make, and also know what the min bet sizes are etc you have to be really aware of your position and when it’s your turn to act and where your chips are on the table, but if you aren’t sure the dealer and other players are usually great at helping out and explaining stuff live games are usually deeper stacked with much longer rounds ie a round would be 1 hour instead of 8 mins online (but you’d see the same amount of hands).

Online you have tools to help you learn, a lot of freerolls and so it’s cheaper to learn. party poker has a great new coaching tool in ‘whizz’ but it’s only available on PC - but it’s really good at spotting leaks in your game and setting missions to help you get rid of them. They have a ton of freerolls and ways to get free tickets to satellites that it’s a cheap way to get experience on line along with some pointers

had my first live poker experience recently and it was definitely different and more exciting than online poker. just being with other players and watching their behavior was interesting. would definitely encourage trying live poker once in a while.

I played live poker long before I started online and I think the major difference is the cost $$$ factor. I can play online in a tournament or cash game for very small to medium stakes, however in a live Casino game usually the min by in is $300 and if your playing against unknown players it can get expensive real fast. Consider playing in a live cash game when your opponents are mostly Oil patch workers, their concern about $$$ is usually little they bet crazy and they easily push out the more timid players..unless you always catch a monster you can be broke quickly...whereas even the cash games on line are more laid back

Of course online and offline poker are different! You get completely new emotions in offline poker. It's more colorful! But it is important not to show these emotions, because the psychology factor in offline poker is crucial. ;)

Sounds like you should be playing in more live events rather than grinding it out online against bot farms and pros.

It's very different. Offline you are going to be playing at one table and probably get bored out of your mind if you get used to the pace of online and especially playing multiple tables. As a result you are probably going to find it easier to run into players that play way too many hands offline, compared to online where players can more easily just fold their hands and wait for the hands that fit their desired range.

Online is a completely different environment from offline. Also, different buy-ins will change the way players play in either online or offline/live.

The biggest skill that you have to master that is transferable between online and offline is patience and, related to that, perseverance. You have to have it to succeed in any poker game.

Yes, online is faster, more aggressive, and full of stats-obsessed regs—live is slower, with more loose-passive players and reads matter more.

Expect more fish, some new players at my table did not even know the card rankings yet. But also some highly experienced regs at your table. With some experience, you'll spot accordingly.

Tables are much slower. About 20 hands an hour.

Presence, for me it was a whole different experience and somewhat overwhelming at first. But still a very awesome experience. I especially enjoy (friendly) table talk while at the table.
