Part of what makes CardsChat such a great place to visit is that we provide so much information to new players. What do you think is the most important advice to offer someone just starting out? What will help them love and appreciate the game? What is essential for them to know so that they can succeed?

For me, at least one of the most important lessons I can offer is to remember to have fun at the table. Life is short and often full of surprises. We need to enjoy what we do, as often as we can. So don't forget to breathe and have fun! That's why it is called a game of poker! :giggle:

I always (because it's true) write that:

Table Selection and Player Selection are the most important things in poker if you want to earn money.

You also have to learn the basics and bankroll management. But after that, it's a matter of finding a game you can beat. You don't have to be some poker savant - just find a game with worse players.

The above is the Golden Rule if you play for money.

If you play for fun:

Try All the Flavors: Poker isn’t just one game - besides No-Limit Texas Hold’em, check out different Omaha variants, Seven-Card Stud, Razz, Badugi (well maybe not), or even H.O.R.S.E. and 8-Game Mix.

Each one’s got its own vibe, keeping you excited to play more . There’s a poker style that feels like it's meant for you, making almost every hand a good time.

No boredom in poker if you Switch I Up.

With so many games to explore, there’s always something new to try. Poker’s variety keeps you coming back, having fun at the table - just like it’s meant to be.

The most important advice for a beginner poker player is discipline and bankroll management. This means playing within your budget and not risking more than you can afford, and playing games that are appropriate for your skill level.

I would advise a beginner to just take our free CardsChat course. In order for the game to be enjoyable, the player must first of all understand what he is doing. Often, beginners play poker without understanding the basics of the game, and in my opinion, this is a waste of time.

I would say: don't go all-in pre-flop every hand;)

Beginners often think that bluffing is a necessary part of the game. To a certain extent, it is, but only for experienced players. I would advise beginners to keep bluffing to a minimum and play only with strong cards. This would allow them to master the basics of the game faster.

Learn the following before spending even a single penny learning poker strategy. Without knowing the following you can the best poker strategy player in the world and still be a losing player. Patience, discipline/mental toughness/tilt control and bankroll management. With those skills even a rec/hobby player playing a TAG strategy can a be a winning player even in 2025.

Cheers!!!

I guess my answer would vary on my view  Do I want this person to become a good player or just a fish I can skim :ROFLMAO:

The worst thing that can happen to a new player is that he/she will hit a lucky streak from the start. This would give an overly confident view of themself.

You should always learn to walk before you try to run. I guess this falls under the patience section which others have already mentioned.
But if one isn't a patient individual by nature learning to become one can be an impossible task, especially in our short attention span world we have these days.

When you play poker, you might start thinking you want to make it your job,
but try to keep it as a side income.

For me, it’s Bankroll Management and a disciplined way of playing (start hand selection and position at the table).
The next is what type of game do you prefer cashgame or tournaments.
Both need a different approach in play style.
Also try to get a rough overview try to search the CardsChat learning poker area.

The most important advice I’d give to someone starting out is: be patient and focus on learning, not winning fast.

It’s easy to get caught up in results or chase big money, but poker is a long-term game. Take time to understand basic strategy, position, hand selection, and bankroll management. Losing is part of the learning process, so don’t get discouraged — just focus on making better decisions each session. The results will follow.

Be patient and focus on learning, not just winning. Don’t play too many hands, manage your bankroll, and study the basics like position and ranges. Also, review your hands — that’s where real improvement happens. GL!

Poker mentality is probably more important than poker skills. You need to have patience and discipline to always follow your bankroll management. Some players already born with this mindset, so, it's easier for them.

There are actually too many things (Advice) a new player should hear about. One particular advice will not cut it when it comes to poker.

Which would I prefer to give? Patience? Continuous learning? BR management? Aggressive playing? Tilt avoidance? And I can go on and on.

As to what would make a player love and appreciate the game, poker generates enough adrenaline to make anyone love it and appreciate it as long as they keep playing. Let alone if they start winning ...

I'd say the importance of being disciplined. Disciplined with the bankroll, the study and the game.

What I consider to be the most important lesson I have learned and tried to assimilate together with C.C., and have tried to apply to my own life, is the need that poker FORCES you to deal with losses and frustrations.
In this sense, poker is perhaps the cruelest sport. You lose 50 days in a row and then you feel euphoric and happy, the relief of a beautiful victory. In the following 100 days, you are defeated in all of them with no respite in sight.
Poker is something wonderful and terrible, paradoxical like the great things in life.

A simple but effective advice:
"Don't play with junk."
I wish someone had given me this advice when I started out, it would have saved me a lot of nerves.

The best advice I would give you is to watch YouTube videos to learn moves. I would also recommend that you understand that most of the times you lose, it will be your fault, and that you should learn from your mistakes.

To have a good and strict bankroll management , this is the most important thing to do. Secondly to yty to study the game before he goes deep in the higher stakes . If he wants to become a reg or pro he has to take poker seriously .

Bankroll management - you can't learn/ improve without playing and you can't play if you don't manage your bankroll and lose your funds way too soon mostly because of bad games selection... Another important advice, until the player learns more about the game, Tight is Right and be aggressive when you decide to play a pot as this way you'll have easier decisions both preflop and postflop...
