I often struggle with pre-flop decisions, especially in early position. What are the most common pre-flop mistakes beginners should avoid?

All-in out of nothing, with premium cards. Even though you want to win the pot at almost all costs with premium cards, they unfortunately are only another combination of cards that can be beaten through the turn.

Probably the two biggest pre flop mistakes from early position would be limping and playing a wide range.

A lot of trouble in poker starts before the flop. Some of the biggest mistakes I see are
playing too many hands, Don’t limp in with junk just because you’re bored and ignoring position, hands that are fine on the button can be a disaster UTG.

never limp if you not the SB, there are currently some limping strategies in KO tournaments but they are not yet understood by most of the high stakes players, so just don't limp
do not change your opening sizes according to your hand, always keep the same pattern

One mistake I used to make a lot pre-flop was calling too much instead of either raising or folding. It feels “safe” to just call, but most of the time it just puts you in awkward spots later. Another big one is playing weak hands out of position—always comes back to bite me.

One of the most common pre-flop mistakes beginners make is playing too many hands, especially from early position. It’s tempting to see a lot of flops, but starting with weak hands out of position usually leads to difficult spots later on. Sticking to stronger ranges when you’re in early position can really help avoid getting trapped in tough situations. Position is key in poker, and the earlier you act, the tighter your starting hand selection should be.

Another big mistake is limping instead of raising. Limping often gives your opponents cheap chances to see the flop, and that can put you in trouble. Raising not only builds the pot when you have a strong hand, but it also puts pressure on others and gives you more control. Over time, focusing on disciplined hand selection and avoiding passive plays will make your pre-flop decisions much stronger.

One of the biggest pre-flop mistakes I see (and that I made myself when starting out) is playing too many hands from early position. It’s tempting to limp in with hands like suited connectors or weak aces, but without position, they usually lose more than they win. Another mistake is not adjusting bet sizes — open-raising too small gives opponents cheap flops, while raising too big risks bloating the pot unnecessarily. Finally, beginners often forget about stack sizes; shoving or calling raises without considering effective stacks can turn a decent hand into a costly mistake. Learning to tighten up in early positions and open up more in late positions makes a huge difference.

#1 mistake is to play a hand preflop that you do not know how to play post flop efficiently. Example you open A6s preflop and get 3 callers and flop an A no flush cards. Lots of new players lose big pots to better Ax hands or 2 pair hands or sets. The reason is they do not know how to value a weak top pair hand in big pots. You see that with A9s flopping a 9xx and losing a big pot.

You should never limp with AA, KK, QQ. I think anyone who does that is making a big mistake.
