Do you prefer set-mining with small pairs or turning them into a bluff preflop?

This can depend on lots of variables. Are you playing cash games or tournaments? If it is cash, how long have you been playing? Do you have a feel for the others at the table? Lots of variables, the same applies to tournament poker. How deep are you in the game? Are you ITM?

I would say I need more information before answering your question.

The strategy with small pairs is very dependent on stack sizes and also on positions and the general situation. Small pairs are generally bad hands to 3-bet to a non all-in size, because they dont block any strong hands in our opponents range, and they play poorly postflop, when the stack to pot ratio is low. So if stacks are to deep to 3-bet all-in, we usually prefer to just call or sometimes fold a small pair, if someone else has already entered the pot. Because of the same rationale they are also hands, that we might choose to limp behind with rather than isolate the limper, especially if 2 or more people have already limped.

I generally play my younger peers on the defensive. They scare me a lot because you tend to lose a lot of money with them if you start betting hard at first.

It depends on many factors. But in general, I have to say that I rarely bluff. I almost always try to catch a set, unless my opponents let me do so, of course :)
