Hey everyone,

I’ve been playing poker casually for a while, and one thing I keep struggling with is finding the right balance between being aggressive and being patient. Sometimes I tighten up too much and miss opportunities, and other times I get overly aggressive and end up spewing chips.

Recently, I had a spot in a low-stakes online game where I flopped top pair with a decent kicker. I went aggressive, but my opponent played back hard and I couldn’t figure out whether I was ahead or just walking into a trap. It made me wonder: how do you all decide when to keep pressing with aggression versus when to slow down and control the pot?

I’d love to hear your thoughts — especially from players who have improved this aspect of their game. Do you use any specific rules, mental checklists, or strategies to guide your decisions in tough spots?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to learning from you all!

One thing I think about is how many streets of value I generally want to get, depending on what my hand generally is. Like if it is top pair I don’t necessarily want to go aggressive all three streets, maybe just two, and I can split it a few different ways, check then bet bet, bet bet check, or bet check bet, this controls the pot better. Medium pair I look at just one street of betting, two pair or better I’m looking at going for all three streets.
This is all going to depend on my opponent, or how many opponents are in the pot, my position, how many big blinds I have, what part of the tournament it is, are we on the bubble or in the money, things like that. Good luck!

Hey Zombie,
you can decide between aggression and pot control in poker by assessing your hand strength, position, stack depth, and opponent tendencies. Use aggression with strong hands or profitable draws to build the pot, leverage a positional advantage to control the action, and pressure opponents with a tight, cautious table. Slow down and control the pot by checking or calling with hands that are too strong to bluff but too weak to value bet aggressively, when you suspect an opponent has a better hand, or to avoid significant losses against aggressive opponents.

Hopefully could help,
Greetings Natox

how do you all decide when to keep pressing with aggression versus when to slow down and control the pot?

The key is hand reading --
How strong is my hand vs Villain range. How strong is my range vs V range---By strong I mean is it the nuts top of range or just strong now.

Example we have A9 on 952R top top seems good but is it? If we bet and get raised what raises us? Build that range. How is our hand doing vs that range?

What is our range in this spot--build that range IE Do we have AA KK and if so why would our V raise us when we could have those hands? Would J9 really want to raise us? It might we want to learn why.

By building ranges and then understanding the most likely actions our V would take with those raises we learn to play for stacks or pot control.
