Tilt, does anyone have any tips for controlling the emotional part of the game? It happens that for a good while during sections I play with a lot of discipline, but at some point I lose control and ruin everything I've achieved up to that point, whether it's due to a bad bid or something else.

I also had this multiple times and ended my entire bankroll on tilting, so the danger is real.

Things that have worked for me:

During the session:
  • - This one is the hardest - Check your emotional state after a bad beat, are you steaming or tilting? If so take a (small) break or end the session for the day. If you continue playing or try to chase losses chances are you'll lose big, 'cause you are not playing your best game in an emotional state. You should be neutral and focussed when you decide to continue.
  • Do not move up stakes.
  • Do not play more tables then you did before.
  • Take a breather (4x deep inhale, 4 seconds of holding your breath, then exhale).
  • Drink and/or eat something.
Outside of the session:
  • Working out
  • Hiking
  • Meditation
  • Mindfullness
  • Post game analysis: Were you truly unlucky? If so, did you make the +EV play that will pay out in the long run, just not this time. On most sites you can save the hand for later. Otherwise make a screenshot, you can even share it here.
Hope it helps, best of luck!

You need to figure out and understand what the reason is. If you react so emotionally, perhaps the problem lies in your inflated expectations of the game or failure to adhere to bankroll management. Once you understand what the reason is, you will be able to solve the problem.

The truth is not easy for anyone to be focused and knowing how to control emotions is essential.

How long are your avg sessions? Maybe they're too long and you're not taking enough breaks during the session. Maybe you're playing too many tables. In these cases the answer is easy. Don't play that long, cut sessions short(play two short sessions not one long one) or take longer breaks during a session(this might not work for MTT's). Play a table of 2 less.

You can also take some extra second between decision. You don't need to take forever or drag thing one way too long but a few extra seconds between each decision never hurts. Along with them extra seconds some deep breathes. How about some relaxing music or sounds. I typically have TSN on or music in the background when playing.

In the end there's lots of things you can try different things work and different people. Maybe get a stress ball you can squeeze while playing or when you feel tilt coming on. Maybe a good stiff drink to sip on.....whiskey/scotch or whatever you prefer to drink. Don't be afriad to try different things till you find something that works for you while playing.

After the session is easier. Whatever you normally do for fun and relaxation when stressed should work.Maybe that's going for a run, playing with your furbaby, having a drink, soaking in the tub, hitting the gym for a workout etc etc etc.....the list is endless.

Also as Iryna says just above read the book "The Mental Game of Poker" it will likely help as well.

Cheers!!!

What’s helped me the most with tilt is setting a stop-loss rule before I even start playing—if I lose a certain number of buy-ins or hit my time limit, I step away, no exceptions. I’ve also learned to spot my early signs of frustration, like rushing decisions or playing hands I’d normally fold, and the moment I notice them, I take a break. Outside the tables, I try to keep a routine that keeps me sharp and calm, like exercising, meditating, or reviewing my hands after sessions. Most importantly, I’ve accepted that bad beats are just part of poker, so I focus less on short-term results and more on making the best decisions I can.

For me, the only thing that really worked was time. It took a while before I finally learned how to keep myself in check. Before that, no matter what advice I got or how hard I tried, I’d still lose control every now and then — just like you. Same story with sports betting, by the way.

Controlling your emotions directly affects your performance and the achievement of your goals. If you have goals, you should focus solely on them and completely disregard any emotions. When you feel like making hasty or ill-considered decisions, think about your goals and whether your actions are bringing you closer to them.

Egyébként ugyanez a történet a sportfogadással is.
It's hard to stay focused in a long game. Tired, I can no longer pay attention and then I make mistakes.
