Hey CardChat family! 👋

We’ve already covered pot odds, implied odds, MDF, Alpha, WTB ratio… but advanced poker never stops. Let’s add two more critical terms that every serious player should know:

Code:
Bluff Catcher — a hand that only beats your opponent’s bluffs, but loses against all their value hands.
Example: Calling river with 3rd pair because the only way you win is if villain is bluffing.

Breakeven % — the minimum fold equity you need for a bluff to be profitable.
Formula: Risk / (Risk + Reward)
Example: If you bluff $50 into a $100 pot, breakeven % = 50 / (50+100) = 33%.
That means your bluff works if opponent folds more than 33%.

Alpha (α) — theoretical ratio of bluffs to value bets in an optimal betting strategy.

MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) — percentage of hands you must defend to avoid auto-profit bluffs.
Formula: MDF = 1 – (Bet Size / (Pot Size + Bet Size))

WTB Ratio (Won at Showdown to Bet ratio) — how often you win at showdown compared to how much you bet.

Pot Odds — ratio of the pot to the cost of a call.

Implied Odds — pot odds plus future potential winnings.

Reverse Implied Odds — when you hit your hand but risk losing more because opponent has better.

Equity — your mathematical share of the pot.

Fold Equity — the chance your opponent folds, adding value to your play.

ICM — tournament model measuring real money value of chips.

EV — long-term expectation of a play.

John Nash said:
“In games of strategy, the balance is often hidden in the numbers.”

Questions for the community:
– Do you use bluff catchers often, or do you prefer folding in marginal spots?
– How do you apply breakeven % when planning your bluffs?
– Which advanced concept was the hardest for you to understand at first?

Let’s keep building this living dictionary so any player can level up their game with solid theory. CardChat can be the best place for that! 🃏🔥
