If you had the option to be equally succesful as either a professional poker player or a professional sportsman, what would you prefer?

Many people now call themselves professional athletes. I'll just say it's fashionable. But no one understands that a professional athlete is a person who plays sports in life, who glorifies his country, his family and friends.
A poker player thinks only about himself and his family first

You got a good point there.

I would definitely prefer sports. Sport is good for your health, unlike sitting at a computer or a poker table for hours on end.

Without a doubt Iwould rather be a professional sportsman. Ideally a sport that makes decent money.

I could always play poker after that sporting career!! Or even during

I think both options are good. But I would also rather be an athlete than a poker player. After I finish my sports career, nothing will stop me from becoming a poker player. But after my poker career is over, I don't think I'll be able to become a professional athlete.

I would hate to be either one of them. Athletes are injured and poker players are in debt

Well, to each their own — I’m not going to become an athlete anymore, so I choose poker.

Although it takes a lot of dedication to be succesful in any sport, I'd rather to be professional in other sports (as soccer or athletics).
I think you have much shorter intense sessions.

I would prefer sports because you're not stuck in front of a computer all day but with a caveat - some sports such as American football are ruinous to your health. Lots of former NFL players out there with severe brain damage from repeated concussions.

By far, being a pro athlete is the better choice. Particularly, maybe a bench player who makes a guaranteed minimum $200k annually playing on a team as a substitute, or otherwise Top 25 but not Top 5 so you could make all the money without the drama. You get to be paid to be healthy and in your best physical condition.

Vs.

Grinding away hours and days staring at cards or images of cards to ... mostly lose, until the luck works again for a moment. Dealing with withdrawal and stress.

"bench player who makes a guaranteed minimum $200k annually". Just described Scott Carson perfectly. He has 2 champions league and has played like 10 matches in his career.

At my height, 5’1”, it would be difficult to play any sport professionally…being a retiree on small fixed income from pensions, I don’t think I would have the cash flow to start a decent poker bankroll…but given the choice, I would rather be a professional athlete.

Fair enough, very logical reasoning :)
