You sit there smiling, stacking chips like the game’s already yours.
But this isn’t luck — it’s the calm before the bloodbath.

You hit your set on the flop? Cute.
You slow-play your flush draw? Adorable.

But when that river card drops, and your jaw does too,
you’ll realize you were never in control.
Because I don’t chase pots. I haunt them.

I’m the backdoor straight you didn’t see.
The runner-runner nightmare you forgot was possible.
I’m the reason your hand history reads like a horror story.

So enjoy the turn. Pray on the river.
But just know — once I’m done with you,
you won’t fear losing.
You’ll fear playing again

I don’t fear you and never will. I know you are part of the game and I accept you as you are. I know you are the sneaky straight, I know you are runner runner, and when you try to crush my spirit I will smile and enjoy the fact that you can’t and never will! I will enjoy you crushing the spirit of my opponents who can’t stand you, this is my entertainment!

If I have the TRUE nuts on the flop or turn nothing you do can scare me.

That's why I always try to finish the hand before the river. Or make the player (who likes to watch the river) the most disadvantageous conditions on the turn. But yes, for passive players on the board, river can be a real nightmare, especially with deep stacks. :)

You could be my best friend or my worst enemy.
Either way, it does not matter to me.
Finding out is the fun of it!

The river will always be dangerous for whoever has the best hand of the round. It's exciting when that one card on the river brings down a monster hand. Players who have excellent hands from the start should play offensively to keep the "curiosities" away from the river, otherwise they could end up in trouble. The river is cruel and always claims victims with lethal force! The river does not forgive lack of technique in a play. Be careful!

I totally agree with this comment — the river really is the great equalizer in poker.
It’s incredible (and frustrating) how one card can flip everything, especially when you’ve been ahead the entire hand. That’s why I also believe in playing strong hands aggressively, especially early on, to price out those speculative calls and reduce the chances of a painful surprise.
The river punishes hesitation and poor decision-making — it really doesn’t forgive. Like you said, it claims victims with lethal force, and I’ve definitely been one of them. Great insight, compadre Fernando!
