I’ve been thinking a lot about how poker isn’t just a game of cards, but more of a mental battle with yourself. Every time we sit down, it’s not only about ranges, math, or spots – it’s also about patience, discipline, and controlling emotions when things don’t go our way.

Sometimes I feel that the real skill is not in winning big pots, but in avoiding unnecessary risks, folding in spots where ego wants to fight, and waiting for the right moment.

What do you guys think? Do you consider poker more of a psychological challenge rather than a purely mathematical game? And how do you personally work on your patience and tilt control during long sessions?

I also argue heavily and advocate that proper Poker is not gambling what so ever. To call Poker gambling is equivalent to gambling everyday when you step outside your house

Certainly, when you lose your self-control, poker swallows you up.

Yeah well said, I think every time we sit down to play it is an opportunity to work on self control, and these poker players are giving us the opportunity to do that, like when they “get lucky” and suck out on the river, we can use this as a chance to not tilt but to look at it from an emotional distance and not get to that point to where you just get angry all the time. It’s just not a fun way to play the game being angry and I don’t understand why people play if they can’t control themselves. Keep calm and have fun, keep your emotions and your egos and your entitlement all in check and this game will be a way funner experience for you. Good luck and have fun!

Well said, I had chip lead at a big tournament last night and was guaranteed for min cash at least but I self-destructed with few stupid bluffs because of my weak ability to handle any mental stress

Very true, you have to have a lot of patience and wait for the right time to develop your hands.

I believe that patience and self-control are part of the game as a whole. You'll have to deal with this your entire life, regardless of your knowledge or professional level. It's a challenge that will last your entire career.
Unless you can shield your mind.

It's definitely hard to stay in control of your poker game on a day when nothing's going right. So if you're having a bad day, go for a walk and come back when you're calmer.

I play for fun, but I try to play correctly and with discipline, and playing correctly brings me the most satisfaction. It's hard to achieve good results, but it's not that difficult to be a good player if you want to :)

I fully agree with the author's statement that poker is a very challenging game that requires us to use all our skills and emotions.

Patience is a quality definitely needed in poker. When to commit, when to fold. Attack or sit back and watch. Many things to take into account and many choices to be made.
Love it.

Of course, psychology is present in poker anyway.

La paciencia es una cualidad fundamental en el póker. Cuándo comprometerse, cuándo retirarse. Atacar o esperar. Hay muchos aspectos a considerar y muchas decisiones que tomar.
Me encanta.
I agree with you

Poker is often a battle of patience and self-control. At the table, it’s not just about the cards you’re dealt, but how you manage your emotions, your impulses, and your decisions. A single hand can test your discipline, while a long session challenges your focus and endurance. The players who succeed are not always the ones with the best hands, but those who can remain calm under pressure, resist the urge to chase losses, and make rational choices even in tense situations.

In many ways, poker mirrors life — teaching you to stay patient, think ahead, and control your reactions. Mastering self-control at the table translates into better decisions, both in the game and beyond.
