I’ve been thinking about how differently people approach the game depending on whether it’s online or live. For me, online poker feels more fast-paced, with tougher multi-tabling decisions and less time to think. Live poker, on the other hand, has a slower rhythm but brings in the psychological aspect — reading people, handling table talk, and managing your own patience.

So I wanted to ask the community:

Do you feel stronger playing online or live?

What are the biggest adjustments you make when switching between the two formats?

And do you think one format makes you a better player in the other?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I've never played poker live, so I'd love to try it someday.

live gets boring and dragged out, while online you play multiple tables at a time, so you can stay focused a bit eassier

I've always played online. Maybe one day I'll play live.

I'm just a recreational player. I play online and sometimes live. To play live you need to be physically present in a casino. I don't have a lot of free time and I think most adults don't. Online is just easier, I can play from home. Not making any money out of it, though. I just play for fun. If I make any money I'll spend it on a poker tournament.

I prefer playing in person; it's more exciting, following the reactions, trying to decipher the cards and anticipate the moves.

It's been ages since the last time I played live poker... and I didn't get to play that much TBH.

I guess that if I'd play live today I'd find it slow and would likely get kind of desperate to get some cards faster. So, I have to go with online poker.

This is a very interesting question...

My game doesn't change much from online to live, but in live, we have to remember that everything is slower; it just changes the pace of the game. To avoid getting bored, I end up taking advantage of the time to analyze my opponents' plays and think about strategies for each villain. In live, we still have a lot of recreational players and many players who have no idea about ranges and such, so I tend to identify that too. If I have players who have no idea about any of this, I don't need to think about it much, because they'll play the cards they find attractive.

In online, however, I'm more concerned with doing what needs to be done without too many worries. After all, I'm in the comfort of my own home, with everything in hand... and if I get knocked out of the tournament, there are thousands more to play... in live, when the buy-ins end, you have to go home, there's food, transportation, and other expenses.

But generally speaking, the only thing that changes is the dynamic of the environment; other than that, everything stays the same.

Now that I'm recovering from a vision injury, which leaves me with only 10% vision in my right eye, it's very difficult to play live. Yesterday, I struggled to play... so I've been opting for online.

Regarding quality, I think due to many events in my personal life, in all aspects, I'm learning to adapt better, but not every day. I have neither the mentality nor the patience for the game, and when I try to play under these conditions, the game goes away. In other words, my game and its quality are more linked to my state of mind than anything else. I've been studying and developing a lot in this mental and physical area over the past few months, as I want to start my career change and start making a living from poker.

Live poker is always the best choice, you will minimize cheating, bots, the feeling of sitting and chatting with other players at the table is also great.

I confess that I've never played live poker, I imagine it must be much more fun than online, I hope to play one day.

...for experienced players the difference in technique is not that big, what changes is in relation to the tells that the opponent makes in addition to the bets... I prefer live, but online helps a lot to evolve in the game...

If I'm playing a Live tournament and only have the bankroll for 1 bullet, I think I subconsciously play tighter. Online you can just jump straight into the next one. Live there is the travelling there and back, which can be a rubbish journey back if you bust within 5 minutes (as I have - Kings V. Aces all in pre, I had the A's) :p.

Worse there's the temptation of joining a cash game which you don't have the bankroll for, or even worse playing in the pit (not a problem for me, never seen the appeal of roulette / blackjack).

The random number generator (RNG) is really existing in live poker. And how to characterize online poker, I can't find the answer for years. :)

Live definitely feels slow and inconvenient compared to online but overall I think it's better for developing certain skills. The pace forces you to be more present and deliberate with each decision and there's a lot more value in observing opponents and picking up on physical and verbal cues. Online sharpens your technical game and multi-tabling builds discipline but it can become robotic. Switching between the two formats is always an adjustment for me mostly in terms of patience and focus. Live helps me slow down and think deeper about spots while online keeps my fundamentals sharp.

I prefer live poker...when I'm playing live, it means I'm on vacation, so I'm already in a more mellow mood. The problem of busting out in the first 5 minutes is not a problem...I just go have a workout in a luxurious hotel gym. I also enjoy the social aspect of the game...I like talking to my fellow players, which I can't do online because I type too slowly.

Hey there,
online poker offers a high volume of hands and tracking software for data-driven improvement, but presents a tough field of disciplined players. Live poker offers a slower, less technical, and often softer game with physical tells, but with far fewer hands played, it's a much slower and more expensive path to improvement.

See you,
Natox

I've never played live, I think it's very boring, since playing online, I can play up to 10-12 tables, and live I could only play at one table, that would be very boring for me.

Depends on the mindset. If im quietly angry and focused i kill it live...
If im calm i kill it online

Online - If i were to play live, I do not think I'll abled to contain my excitement if i get good cards. So most players will able to read me :) and depending on how accurate they are.... might mean danger for me (or them)

Online, you play a lot more hands, which means that winning and losing players are identified much faster.Live, I play tighter and focus more. Online, I tend to press buttons faster and sometimes lose stacks, which I wouldn't do in person.
