Psychology Master or Math Genius
If you could be blessed to be one or the other, which one do you think would make the better poker player?

Imagine you could be a psychology master and peer into an opponents thoughts and think what he thinks that you think. You could predict his moves in advance and why he's doing them.

Imagine you could be a math genius and automatically in the top of your head figure out pot odds, implied odds, reverse implied odds and all of that stuff related to the math of poker odds and probabilities.

If you could choose one trait to have which would it beany why?

The way you describe the different gifts I have to go with Psychology Master since it sounds like actual mind-reading.

Easy game if you can read minds.

It's hard to say who can be the best player. I think it may depend more on personal qualities, discipline and patience. Personally, for some reason, the option with a Psychology Master are closer to me.

You don't have to be a psychologist or a mathematician to be a good and professional player. And in my opinion, both psychologists and mathematicians can have relatively equal chances. Luck plays a significant role, and it can be on the side of a psychologist or a mathematician.
In general, in my opinion, there are two most important traits that directly affect a player's development and progress: patience and discipline. So, the best player is the one who is more disciplined and more patient.

Easy choice as you don't need to be a math genius to be good at poker. I'm winning player and no math genius. So the math required to be a winner at poker is very simple and easy to learn. Psychology master certainly is not very simple and easy to learn. Which I know a bit of about that as well as one of my ex's way back in the day was a psychology major so I learned a few things in our 4+ years together as I helped her quite a bit.

With that said you don't need either to be a winning player. Psychology master is just way hard to archive and more important of the two. At least in my opinion. I also have almost zero interest in being a math genius. BORING numbers. At least psychology very interesting.

Cheers!!!

Personally, I would choose "mastery of psychology" without hesitation, because the mathematics in poker is elementary, something at the level of high school

As others have said poker maths is not too hard, so I think mastery of psychology would be better

Hello everyone. I am likely leaning towards the skills of a master's in psychology because you can learn mathematics much faster. However, knowledge of psychology and the ability to apply it is a lengthy process. To know patterns and be able to read people requires patience and the ability to observe carefully.

I think a good player combines many areas. Even this percentage of luck matters, how many times has a good player lost to an amateur. If you are looking for a way to win, you need to add an element of luck.

Yes, I agree.
Luck or Karma is a big factor.
Cards are funny things with a mind of their own.
Last week I was playing a tournament on the bubble and was dealt :as4::ah4:. Well Karma shoved :kc4::3s4: and I called. Turns out that I got the aces cracked and finished on the bubble.
It was like the lady in the red dress got so close to me that I could smell everything about her and then she just blew in my ear and walked away.
Maybe some people would be tight and fold that on the bubble and not give luck a chance to intervene there, but I am going to play pocket aces and so in a way I made a choice to let luck control my fate. I could have folded and maybe cashed in the game, but the lady in the red dress made me be bold and play my aces.

I would choose math if playing online and psychology if playing live. tells are so much more limited online so math skills would be a greater advantage, but IMO you can do very well in live poker if you are a wizard at reading people even if your math skills are weak.

Mathematics is a brain trainer.Mathematics is the most abstract of all the sciences, and in this sense it can truly be called the queen. In poker it plays an important role.

I think it would be right to choose the one who will be more fortunate. Who is more lucky, a mathematician, a psychologist, or a janitor, it's hard to give a definite answer :)

Psychology master ? Is that possible ? I would choose the second option . A math genius on the long run on live poker will be victorious , on the green zone , with profits .

I'd like to develope psychology or "menthalist" skills. I don't think that poker needs too advance math skills. (I'm not saying that you don't need math to play poker 😅).

I think that a good "feel" for the math helps without having to do all of that dividing and multiplying and worrying about what are the reverse implied odds.
Now if you can think what your opponent thinks that you think that he thinks then you have something there.

making the best possible decisions based on probabilities. But in the unpredictable world of poker, understanding people might give you an edge that pure math can’t.

For what we see on TV shows both psychology master and math genius are good poker players, but usually psychology masters are more sociable people, so, I think I would choose this one.
