So you are into casino games? That's fine. Nothing really wrong with it if you can keep your head straight and play for the right reasons.

And what are those you ask? Well, fun - mainly.

Going to a casino and maybe staying a night can be a very immersive experience if that is what you like. But playing online can have its benefits too.
Even though these two seem like a two totally different things, and in many ways they certainly are, the end result might still be very similar in both cases. House always wins.

Some of the online casinos look really pretty and alluring with carefully designed imagery, polished graphics and sounds and audiovisual feedback on every step of a game. They are not there simply to entertain you. Every minute more you are engaged in a game means more money for the casino.

But surely playing from home is more safe?

Not sure. This subject has not been studied enough. There probably are no cocktail waitresses bringing you drinks next to your keyboard but online gaming has its pitfalls.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded a study where 131 healthy adults were exposed in a laboratory environment to a different game settings designed by the researchers. In one of the trials subjects were presented with scenarios where one had to choose between bigger gains but higher risk of loosing vs low gains but smaller chance of ruin. When the options were presented in a simple manner the subjects were more inclined to make more carefully thought-out decisions. But when casino sounds and imagery were added the subject were willing to take higher risks. These findings were present also in other test set-ups.

On another study conducted by researchers from two Australian universities the effects of blue light that emanates from computer screens and which can also be present in casino environments were taken under investigation. In this study 15 volunteers were asked to complete hypothetical gambling tasks under different lighting scenarios. On average the subjects were less concerned with loosing if the decisions were made under heavy blue light when compared to more warmer color temperatures. The researchers think that a blue light might be activating specific eye cells that connect to brain regions that control decision making and risk taking.

So yes, even light may matter.

We may be more influenced by the circumstances we are in any given time than we care to admit.

I think it's much harder to win online. In normal casinos, it is always more promising to play than online, but that is my subjective opinion. I have rarely been to casinos and may not have as much experience as others. I am not saying that playing online is boring, but online gaming is very dynamic and, in my opinion, quite artificial, and does not give the player the same effect as playing in a casino in person.

If you dont have your feelings under control then online casinos can be simply pretty dangerous. Here in mexico so much is open and available. Only a few clicks and bam you are online and on a table. Big wins/losses clicks away. Alone with yourself.

The key, as already statet multiple times by others, is to see it as some form of entertainment. Like going to the cinema or in the case of online, renting a movie.

The moment when we start to play for income, chasing losses or play with money we cannot loose is when it becomes dangerous. Those providers know exactly how to lure people in with attractive sounds, graphics, free spins etc.

It's obvious that everything is done so that you go home in the morning without any money. This proves once again that it's better to avoid visiting such establishments. I've never spent money in a casino and don't plan to do so.

There's no doubt that brick and mortar casinos are designed to get the adrenaline flowing and encourage players to "play". Our local casinos don't quite live up to the flashy Vegas image though, so maybe in a way we're fortunate? They're actually quite easy to leave with money still in your pocket.

My first trip to a casino was a long time ago, more than 30 years ago. It was my first time playing slots, and to say that I liked it would be an understatement. I was thrilled, and the only thing that upset me at that moment was that I ran out of money pretty quickly.

I do find walking into a live casino to be exhilarating! Online is all about the convenience.

Great post as usual, Tero.
I particularly like the 1st study as I've read something similar about computers, where the blue light is responsible for keeping teenagers up at night or something like that.
Now I'm learning that it could even make people take more risk!? Live and learn ;).

An important fact Debi pointed out is the difference between home (online) and a real casino.
I certainly agree on the word she used: "Exhilarating" as opposed to one single advantage online: "Convenience".
