Casinos have been banned in Brazil since 1946. One of the most widely accepted theories is that the wife of the country's president in 1946, who was very religious and had contacts with church authorities, asked her husband to ban gambling establishments in Brazil.
To this day, despite much debate, physical casinos are still not allowed, only a few online gambling sites.
A close friend told me this story:
His father, being a skilled card player, decided to open a casino.
When gamblers lost their bets, they often left not only money but also jewelry, such as engagement rings, wedding rings, and even properties with the casino owner. The wives of these gamblers would come to the casino to beg for the return of their possessions, which were practically pawned. The casino owner often returned these possessions, taking pity on the pleas of the gamblers' wives and families. However, one day he was arrested for engaging in this illegal activity. He had a young son who was very intelligent. The boy was only three and a half years old when he read the headline on the front page of a local newspaper about his father's arrest. His mother was stunned to discover that those were the first words her son had ever read.

My friend was that boy.
He remembers this feat to this day, even though he was so young at the time.

By looking at the dominating numbers of Brazilians playing poker everywhere, I would've never thought that there are no casinos in brazil ;).
Interesting story though. But those wives who got their possessions returned to them should've returned the favor and helped the guy get out of prison.

Yes, as I said, in Brazil there are only a few legal online gambling sites, even though Brazilians are big gamblers. Legal discussions have been going on for many, many years.
The casino owner got out of prison and had to pay bail. Yes, he should have been helped by those wives, I don't know if he was!

Here, poker should not be played in casinos, as they are not legal. There are several clubs that organize these poker tournaments, which are legal because they are not considered “games of chance.” Physical casinos where there are slot machines and other games are prohibited. Poker is considered a sport in Brazil. Since 2012, poker has been recognized by the Ministry of Sports as a “mind sport,” distinguishing it from games of chance. Brazilian law does not consider poker a game of chance, as it involves skill and strategy, according to court decisions and expert reports. Therefore, players can play poker in tournaments and on online platforms without legal concerns, as long as they follow regulatory guidelines. Good luck!
