What are the Payout Odds in Roulette?

On a double zero roulette wheel, the true odds are 37:1 as there are 38 numbers on the American roulette wheel. However, because of the house edge, the actual payout odds in roulette are 35:1.

In betting terms, this means that the chances of a single number on a straight-up bet winning are 37:1, but you would receive a payout based on odds of 35:1.

Admittedly, these are the highest odds of any casino game but don’t let that deter you.

Outside Bets: Lower Payouts and Higher Probability

The outside bets are the wagers you can make on the roulette table that do not contain numbers. They are essentially on the ‘outside’ and around the edge. They have much better chances of hitting than inside bets but you probably won’t score a huge payout.

Column	Here you bet on any of the three long columns which contain 12 numbers each (excluding the 0 and/or 00 at the end)	2:1
Dozen	The table is split into 1st, 2nd and 3rd 12 numbers. They each contain six red and six black numbers. You’ll win if the ball lands on a number in the section you chose	2:1
High/Low	You make a bet that the ball with land in the high end of the table (19-36) or the low half (1-18)	1:1
Even/Odd	Very simply, you’re betting that the number the ball lands on will be an odd number or an even one (excluding the 0 and/or 00)	1:1
Red/Black	Like with Even/Odd, you bet on the color of the number the ball will land on	1:1

Inside Bets: Big Wins with Lower Probability

Inside bets are wagers you can make ‘inside’ the roulette table. You have all the numbers at your disposal. Choose a single number, a set of numbers, or even a whole chunk of numbers – the choice is yours.

The payouts for inside bets can really make your night, but with the chances of hitting being lower than outside bets, it all comes down to a spin of the roulette wheel.

Straight-up	A bet on a single number on the table. You will only win if the spin lands on that exact number	35:1
Split	You can split two numbers you bet on by placing your chip on the line which divides them. For example 11 and 8 or 36 and 33	17:1
Street	You can bet on a ‘street’ by placing your chip(s) on the edge of a three-number row. For example, 7, 8 and 9 or 22, 23 and 24	11:1
Trio	This bet incorporates the 0 on a European table or 00 on American table and the two numbers which adjoin them	11:1
Corner Bet (Square/Box Bet/Quarter)	This bet has a few names but essentially they all refer to the shape of the bet. If you place your chips on the position where four numbers meet, you'll have placed a corner bet, making it look like a square or a box. For example 1, 2, 4 and 5 or 20, 21, 23 and 24	8:1
Line (Avenue Bet/Double Street)	This is where you bet on two adjoining rows, which amount to a total of six numbers. For example, 13, 14 and 15, and 16, 17 and 18	5:1
Five Number Bet (Basket)	This bet uses the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 on an American roulette table	6:1

As you know, the house advantage, or ‘edge’, in roulette is 5.26%. But did you know that’s only the house edge for the most common version of the game, American roulette?
