Have you ever had to withdraw from a long-running online tournament with a lot of chips because you had to fulfill other family, social or professional commitments?

More than once. However, I guess if I had worked out that the game I was playing could potentially go on for 10 -12 hours, before I started it. Bad planning by me.

How can you know that, well, like me, I expect 99% of you don't enter a tourney to finish 2nd?????

Yes, I have had such situations. And it upset me a lot. Since then, I don't even start a tournament if I know I might have other things to do.

Before you sit down and play, you really need to have an idea about, how long the tournament will last. Length of blind levels, duration of late registration and field size (guaranty divided by buyin) are strong indications. There are always turbos and SnGs, if you are unable to commit for the next several hours.

This is a poker lesson that everyone should learn - of course unexpected life events cannot be accounted for but generally speaking, if i am entering a big tourney or a long running tournament, i map out a considerable chunk of time for this, usually here in the UK - that time often may extend late into the early morning if required so i need to know the next day is clear to enable me to catch up on sleep and have zero commitments to fulfill.
I have wasted a fair few $ and £ in the past with poor planning - lesson was learnt the hard way!
