Do you think satellite tournaments are a good way to build a bankroll? I've tried a few but I'm not sure if they are more profitable compared to regular low buy-in tournaments.

No. The problem is, that if you want to use bankroll management, then you need to be almost rolled for the target tournament. So if for instance your bankroll is $550, then maybe at most you can play some satellites for $7.5 or $8.8 MTTs, which will typically be $1.1 or $2.2 games. So rather than bying directly into $5.5 MTTs, you are now playing $1.1 or $2.2 satellites, which is not an effective use of your time, unless they are exceptionally soft and/or run with a big overlay.

If on the other hand you play $5.5 satellites to $33 MTTs, then you are not using bankroll management, and therefore per definition you can not built a bankroll. And you are probably also not skilled enough to beat $33 MTTs. So what you are actually doing is not bankroll building but just having some fun and hoping to get lucky.

Not for me maybe someone has built a bankroll that way but I never have. I only play sats and freerolls when there isn't an longer blind level MTT I wanna play currently available or starting soon. If you're a winning player you can beat 2nl and 5nl without much trouble so no reason not to do the below over wasting time playing freerolls and sats as I consider them bingo, HUGE variance and just gambling that depends a lot of luck. blackjack has been a lot more profitable then freerolls and stats have been for me. 20+ years playing online and here's I go about it in 2025....

I take $50 and start at 2nl full-ring. Once I have $150-$200 I start taking shots at 5nl till I have $500. I once I have $500 I look to directly buy-in to $3-5 MTT's with longer build limits(10+ mins) and I play them mostly on the weeks because well they can 6-8+ hours depending on total players entered. My reason for picking 10+ min blind levels is because it reduces the luck and variance compared to the faster MTT's. I also keep playing cash(but with $500 I play 10nl) during the week when I don't have 6-8+ hours to play.

I've gone from $50-$5000 over the years a number of times doing it this way. It's a good challenge, fun and enjoyable. Perfect for a rec/hobby player who loves playing, doesn't wanna risk a lot of money and who enjoys making a bit of side money.

Cheers!!!

Sats are often soft and, depending on the ones that you play, they do not have to be a bingo festival either. Obviously the freebuys and 1 cent sats are going to play like a lottery, at least until the add-on stages for ones with that structure. However, I found that the $0.50 and $1&$2 sats do tend to run in a reasonable manner that works for me in a turbo structure. You definitely can build a bank roll with sats. I can't say if it is the best way to do it, but I would think probably not because there is more variance involved and you aren't approaching the process in the traditional sense of being staked for the games that you end up playing.

Yeah, satellites can be fun and definitely +EV if you know the spots, but I don’t think they’re the best way to build a roll. Most of the time you’re just winning seats, not cash, so unless you can sell them or turn them into something else, it doesn’t really help your bankroll directly.

I like mixing them in though, especially when fields are soft. If you’re good at short stacks and ICM, you can crush. But for steady bankroll growth, low buy-in MTTs or even some cash grind probably make more sense. Satellites are more like a nice “bonus path” to take shots at bigger events without risking too much.

OSatellites tend to be quite tiring, especially if the tournament is right after. More and the best way to enter high-value tournaments at no cost.
