Many players focus a lot on early stage survival and late stage aggression, but the middle stages of MTTs are often where the real skill shows. With stacks usually around 30–50bb, it’s no longer just about set mining or all-in decisions.
In this phase, adjusting becomes crucial:
Opening ranges: You can’t play as loose as in the early levels, but you also can’t just wait for premiums. Good steals and resteals become key.
3-betting: It’s not always for value; sometimes you need to put pressure on late position opens, especially against opponents who oversteal.
ICM isn’t huge yet, but… survival still matters. Don’t take marginal spots just because you “want action.” Preserving your stack has more long-term EV.
Table dynamics: Pay attention to who’s trying to bully and who’s playing scared. Middle stages often reveal tendencies you can exploit later.
I’m curious — how do you guys approach this part of the tournament? Do you tighten up, or do you prefer to stay aggressive and keep building your stack?
