Making the money bubble is your first target, and if you can achieve that more than most on a regular basis, you are a winner, I remember my first cash in a Freeroll Tournament it was only about 32 Cents, but I was so proud of it I took a Screen shot and printed it off, I even intended to have it framed, but decided against that because if I showed it to anyone they laughed, and I just said "Mighty Oaks grow from Tiny Acorns"
They first big Live Tournament I won £200 for 2nd place, and a place in the National Finals, they soon stopped laughing then. 
Weekly games in my local pub, We ran a League game, and from a player base of around 30 or so players we regularly had 3 or 4 tables going, I was a regular on the Final Table, and won the League prize money many times. My only advice is Concentrate on your own game play, ignore everyone else's and try to improve with practice.
Freerolls are a cost effective way of getting that practice for Free!
