Here's a hand I made a the right move on. I was dealt :jd4: :jh4: in mid position. No raises until it comes to me so I raise 5x the big blind(the blinds were (10/20). Everyone folds except for one player who re-raises 3x my bet. I call. The flop:

:9c4: :7s4: :6d4:

Looks good but I'm curious to see what the other player has so I check. He bets $300. I call. The turn is:
:6s4:
Looks a little dangerous now. I havr to see how the other player reacts to this one. He bets $500. At this point I figure he has a higher pocket pair, a 7 or a 9, or on a striaght draw. I decided to make a big decision. I go all in $2,040 more. The player thinks about it for a while. He starts asking "What do you have?" I say "Call and you'll see." He eventually folds but wants to see the last card. THe last card was
:ah4:
He says "Damn it!" It obvious he had an ace which would have beaten me. Another reason why you should bet big to get the player out of the pot if you think he/she is chasing something.

While i understand your point about betting a properly amount that doesn´t give your opponent the correct odds to call (not necessarily all in) to prevent "valid suckouts", i disagree with whit this:

If you to want to know where are you standing a bet is the correct move. The check doesn´t give you any information, because if you check your opponent most likely is going to make a continuation bet, since he became the aggressor after reraising you preflop. So with his bet he may have just overcards or he´s really value betting with a big pocket pair. Even if he checks you aren´t getting information, because you can´t know if he´s slowplaying or he just have a weak hand. But if you bet, you´ll see your opponent reaction, which gives you more information than his action.
