Your idea of poker players pooling their money to start a site is pretty unrealistic and logistically a nightmare. It takes a completely different set of skills to properly run and manage a business, which is what a poker site is, versus just playing poker. And even if they were able to manage the business to perfection, they would still have all the same issues to deal with that other sites do (payment processors, difficulty dealing with banks, legislation, licenses, fraud, etc...).
