The russian economy developed rapidly from 1999 to 2013 thanks to rising energi prices and the countrys increased integration in the global economy. Since 2013 it has contracted though. Or if we are kind stagnated, since some of the fluctuations are due to currency movements.

Right now record high commodity prices are keeping the rubble and the russian economy afloat. The manufacturing sector however is not doing well, since it lack or will soon lack a lot of components, that used to be imported and can not easily be replaced. And of course russians working for those foreign companies, that left the country, are now unemployed.

And looking further ahead within a year or two commodity prices will likely come back down to earth, as adjustments happen globally to both the supply and demand side. And Europe will eventually stop buying Russian gas, which can not as easily be sold to other customers, as oil can. So the economic outlook for Russia is pretty bleak, and anyone pretending something different are fooling themselfes.
