Also a small point of contention I have with something I've seen Phil write here and elsewhere: His statement about the difference between the truly great winners and the everyday grinders being inherent ability isn't true (at least not in most fields - work ethic is the most important factor by far).

It's a bit tougher with poker I guess, because there is a deeper inherent level of chance in who reaches the top (aggressive + successful BRM, run-good/run-bad over longer stretches, etc). But imo, saying that someone is going to reach the top in today's poker climate simply by having a knack for the game is just unrealistic. Maaaaaybe a 0.0001% type of deal, but even Phil's example of Blom is a little misleading. Victor Blom hit the high stakes scene as an unknown, and had enormous swings. I would argue that while he learned quite quickly, he still had to put in a lot of hours and such - most of them playing the nosebleed games with some of the best in the world.
