To understand this better I looked up their website. It seems that the awards were originally called as American Poker Awards, and now they have become more global, or am I wrong?

Personally I have never understood these kind of awards (on any field) that are not recognized outside the industry (like the Oscars). They might make the winners feel warm and fuzzy for awhile but that's just about it.
