This person would look for a satellite, which was just about to start, and had not met the minimum amount of participants required. This would then bring the number of participants down to 4, and with 2 tickets being rewarded, late registration would now close resulting in a massive overlay. Even if he then only managed to secure one of the 2 tickets, it was a massively profitable strategy, because the structure of these satellites is based on a presumption, that the vast majority of players will late register. Which they normally do, when this manipulation is not done.

I brought the cheating to 888 Pokers attention, but for several month they let it continue, and then I stopped playing there for other reasons, so I stopped keeping track of it. So for all, I know, it might even still be going on to this day. As for PokerStars its rare for them to make this kind of mistake, so I think, we can assume, the structure of these satellites will soon be changed ;)
