I often encounter difficulties when I have a strong overpair, such as QQ or KK, on boards with the potential for street or flash. I want to do a very-bet, but sometimes I get caught up against two pairs or sneaky sets. How do you control the bank in such situations? Do you adjust yourself differently depending on the position or number of opponents in the distribution? Would love to hear your thoughts on how to balance aggression and caution in these difficult situations.

Personally when I get in tricky spots like that, I try to remember that an overpair is very nice, but it is still only a one pair hand. So if there are possible draws out there, I will bet to try and protect my hand but if I get resistance and the draws come in then I try to be willing to let the hand go if the story the opponent is telling is that he has one of those big hands. But that is not always as easy to do and I have lost way too many hands with overpairs. ;)

One of the biggest mistakes I see low stakes players make is overestimating the strength of overpairs and thereby outplaying them. And often there will be a set or two pairs. Moreover, even when an overcard appears on the flop, not every player is ready to part with their big pocket pair. For example, many players cannot bury KK for a long time even on A-high boards.

I bet my overpair until I get raised by my villain.

Then I have to think about the situation.

Bet when I'm ahead. Fold when I'm behind.

Good luck !

Playing over pairs are going to have a lot of different factors. The big ones are how many players are in the pot, our position, our stack size, are we ITM or is it the bubble phase.
If I have a big stack like over 100 big blinds, like at the beginning of a tournament then I’m wanting to protect this stack so I don’t run into a bigger hand and loose it all, so I’m pot controlling more, maybe going two streets and not firing three streets. But when I only have like 25 or less big blinds then I’m wanting to get my whole stack in there and if I loose to a bigger hand that’s the way it goes.
