I have listened to several podcasts regarding defending your blinds. One pro says only defend if you have a strong hand while another pro says open your range. Obviously a lot depends on the villain, bet sizing and position. Is there a guiding rule of thumb on when to defend and when to fold?

Generally you should defend a lot of hands, because if you fold you'll play -100BB/100, even if you'll play smth like -80BB/100 you'll already be in better position.

They earlier positon of the opp is and the higher open raise, the less hands u wanna defend obviously, generally the best option would be to find high quality bb defence charts, study them and use at the tables adapting to situation.

GTO Wizard has free basic preflop ranges. Stop guessing based on some random sentences you read or hear and just study those.
