1.  Think of learning poker as two seperate roads you need to travel down at the same time:  The first road being studying the game by reading up on the game.  Get books by Doyle Brunson, Sklansky, Caro and some "fun" books as well on poker ("The Biggest Game in Town").  Also, read forums such as this one here as much as you can to learn from those that play and then take the time to post.  The second road is experience.  There is no substitute for live experience.  Keep a log/journal of live games you've played that include:  mistakes you've caught yourself making, memorable hands, bad beats, starting/game capital, # bets per hour, $/hour made or lost, etc.  You'll be surprised at the end of 3 months to discover the patterns you have developed, both those you want to continue developing and those patterns you need to change.
 
2.  It at all possible, find someone who is winning at poker and begin asking for advice.  Some might find it annoying, some might find it flattering.  I know that the true winners at the game of poker do not mind sharing advice to those that are truly interested in learning.
