Hey everyone.
First post here, so apologies if this has been asked a million times.
I’ve found myself doing a lot better in satellites registering early, and cashing a lot more in tournaments registering late.
Do you prefer early or late registration and why?

Thanks all.

Personally I think joining on time is always better because then you have more opportunity to gain chips by paying well and putting yourself into an advantageous position when the bell rings at the end of late reg. On the other hand saving a couple of hours by jumping in at the last second and getting lucky is always sweet too. It depends on whether you prefer to play or to gamble. Always a trade-off.

It depends on the tournament, if the tournament is ultra I like to enter when it starts, but if it is a regular tournament I enter halfway through.

Time management and hourly wise it's best to late reg vanilla MTTs.

If you Max late reg or near max late reg most of your time can be spent studying the sub 30bb and push fold ranges while also allowing you to play more of the spots you're now studying more often.

You should never late reg a PKO because part of the prize pool is being distributed with every knock out thus less for us to win.

I honestly don't know that much about satellite late reg strategy.

Also you should always just play to your strengths to some extent. If you're more comfortable while having a deep stack in MTTs reg from the beginning and try and earn as much EV as you can where you believe you have an edge and then spend time in the future working on aspects of the game that are more important to your long term MTT career like shorter stack play, push folds and ICM.

Hope this helps!!

Many times the answer is it depends. Sometimes you want to register late because tournaments are very long and it's more tiring, but sometimes you're fully charged and want to play a lot more, so the second option is for you.

I tend to only play longer blind(10+ min) level MTT's to take some of the luck out of MTT's and so I get more hands to play/look at. Obviously the best way to get the most hands to play/look at is to registration early.

Cheers!!!

You want to play hands with fish, fish are usually the first to be knocked out.

In some tourneys it might make sense to register late, but most of the time you are missing out on a valuable opportunity to accumulate chips when the worst players are still in the game.

Its weird all the "pro" late reg guys talk about icm and short stack strategy, but you never see them in the short stack format games. If short stack format is your forte -maybe play the hypers and maximize your winnings instead of watching tourney lobbies.

I prefer early registration because I want to maximize my chances in the early stages of the tournament.

You can enter a tournament as late as the blinds allow you to play comfortably. If the blinds are huge comparing with your small starting stack then it is extremely difficult to play and have a decent course in the game. So it is better to get in earlier to have time to fight!

I always register for tournaments before they start. I don't like to be late and I don't like late registration If I have a choice, I'd rather skip the tournament than register after it starts.

I prefer to play any tournament or satellite from the very beginning so that I have a good stack when registration ends and can move smoothly as the blinds increase.
The only case when I register later in a tournament is if I am late for some reason. But even in this case, I pay attention to the size of the current big blind - it should not be more than one twentieth or one twenty-fifth of the initial stack.

Both.
In time: when there are few minutes or no minutes of late registration. (40%)
Late registration: When I have a lot of time or when I'm playing another tournament. (60%)

early reg:

  • more playability, deeper stacks
  • softer fields at the start
  • more chance to chip up slowly
  • can exploit weaker players
late reg:

  • shorter time commitment
  • fewer decisions, more push/fold
  • skips early variance
  • sometimes softer fields at the end too

I like it best when there is no late reg in a tournament. At least there should be fair play in that. It's pretty annoying when you've been playing with garbage cards for an hour and a half, and then someone comes along and has 5 times more chips than you in 2 hands. I don't think it's very fair, but that's not what poker is about...

I do not like too long registration. 1-2 levels of blinds is perfect for me.

Late registration in a tournament is a convenient feature primarily for those who for some reason cannot or do not want to participate in the game from the very beginning. At the same time, some players intentionally build their personal game schedule on this, while others simply do not want to wait long to get into the prize zone.Joining the game 1-2 hours after the tournament starts allows you to sit down at the table fresh, not tired from several dozen hands. This advantage is more relevant to professionals who play multi-hour sessions on many tables and strive to achieve the maximum advantage.

It depends on the tournament, if it is better to just play in the tournament immediately, if there is an opportunity to get a Vigoda from late registration, then you can start with the late, if you are aimed at the vigash in the tournament, then my opinion is to play the very beginning

Both are good options for entering a tournament, I would just tell you that before a late register you don't do it so close to closing since the blinds are going to be too big for the amount of chips you enter to play with

Late reg can be an advantage cause the first levels are very dull

Advantages of Registering Early

1. Guaranteed Seat

  • You lock in your spot before the tournament fills up or registration closes.

2. Better Table Selection

  • Early registrants often get seated with fewer players initially, allowing more hands played with less pressure and potentially softer competition.

3. More Time to Accumulate Chips

  • If the tournament allows early play before full tables form, you may get a chance to build a bigger stack gradually.

4. Lower Variance

  • You get to play from the very beginning with full stack depth, offering more room for strategic play rather than short-stacked coin flips.

5. Reads on Opponents

  • More time at the table means more hands played, which gives you better reads on your opponents’ tendencies.

Disadvantages of Registering Early

1. Time Commitment

  • You’ll spend the maximum amount of time in the tournament if you go deep — this can be hours longer than someone who late-registers.

2. Less Info on Prize Pool

  • Early on, you don’t know how many players will enter or how big the prize pool will be, which might affect your risk/reward decisions.

3. More Opportunities to Bust Early

  • Playing more hands increases your exposure to variance and potential early exits.

4. Tougher Early Play (Sometimes)

  • Some experienced players register early to maximize play, so tables might be tougher at the very beginning compared to soft late-entry tables.

hi, I prefer registering in front of the beginning of a tournament, even if the late registration makes sometimes party much much longer.. the another solution is to register late, but only some minutes after the beginning. Why? because you still have time to control your chips. I do not think it is worth registering some minutes before the end of late registration because the big blinds are are so high at the section, and you have to make risky disitions to stay in the game.

I like to register early, I don't want to miss out on any early action.
And I also like to play deep stacks.

Early registration gives you the opportunity to win chips when the impatient players are aggressive. Many players just go all in from the start, especially in freerolls. In games where you are actually paying to play, chips you may win in the first few levels, come in handy when the blinds increase.
