I guess they are in a way, although I wouldn't really equate the endurance of a poker player sitting down for 8 hours with the endurance of a marathon runner for example. The poker player does need to keep their concentration for that amount of time, which can be difficult though. When I was talking of the physical element there's the obvious, like how some sports put a great strain on the body needing much strength, aerobic or anaerobic fitness, speed etc. Participants pushing themselves to the physical limit. Going a bit deeper, darts and snooker are reasonably popular in my country. People have sometimes dismissed the idea of those as sports. They don't require some of the things I mentioned. What they have above poker is that in darts your body is still aiming and throwing that dart, in snooker your body is holding and using the snooker cue and aiming that. Both take hand-eye co-ordination even though they are not particularly physical sports when it comes expending great amounts of energy. Neither need strength or stamina in a meaningful way. People have talked about e-sports in recent years and whether they are sports or not, professional video gamers. Those need quick reaction times, and hand-eye co-ordination too at least. That's something they have over poker as well. The only actual physical movements that are part of the game in poker are moving your chips over the line, mucking your cards or if playing online clicking your mouse. They don't require particular skill to do, co-ordination or dexterity and there is nothing involved in these actions that can make one player better than another. There's no points awarded for clicking faster in online play, or slamming your cards down as hard as you can when mucking at the casino. That's why it's below e-sports too for me, which I'm not sure should be sports anyway.
