Teaching this game to a child may not be such a good idea due to the fact that kids look at the game like a gambler would. They do not see value; they see opportunity. Teaching them strategy is not the same as showing them the basics. I have a daughter around 13 whom I have taught very basic information to about the game. For a short time I was showing her how a tournament is generally played. I showed her very basic things to do with the game, like how a flush would beat a straight and that even an ace-high could win a hand. I even let her in on a fun game we had around the holidays with family. In this case I presented her to the game of probability and how poker can be unpredictable. She had fun, but a short time later she became less interested. For the better as I was not prepping her to step into a gambler's game. What made her lose her interest was that it was boring to her and she hated the feeling of losing chips. All-in was depressing lol. On a side note she won the one game we played. Mainly because she was giving up near the end and I endulged her all-ins cause i knew she wanted to be done. This was 2 years ago, she has mentioned the game a couple times, and we will play again in the future. But I make sure to inform her this is an adults game and can be abused if not taken seriously.
