What is the driving force that keeps big losers playing poker again and again?

I think the desire to win back is the main reason for fish to invest in poker over and over again. We all see the juicy prize money offered by the Sunday Million final table, for example. But when a fish loses more money than he can win, he writes comments on every possible poker forum about “poker is evil and never play it”.

You spent some 100 bucks and consider yourself a loser, it's just ridiculous. So I'll tell you, if life knocks you out and brings you to your knees, even if your head is spinning, you need to get up off your knees.I know myself that many lose much more, but sometimes after such failures you start to think "is it really possible to earn money with poker?" After all, there seems to be a source of income, but the money is decreasing. And in such cases you want to give up on the whole thing. Sometimes you even get the idea that all the articles are written so that players play more and lose more, and that's how such sites and poker rooms earn money.

I guess it depends on the scale of the money spent/lost:

Most hobbies cost money, so I think it's okay for regular people to spend some money on the game within their budget and don't care if they win or loose.

But if we're talking about taking loans or cutting other spendings for poker, then it's clearly some sort of addiction going on.

My dad gambled away more than 8 million Swedish kronor (at that time around 1 million dollars).

No inheritance for me:(

He even borrowed money from criminals (luckily without telling me, since I would have done something that could have risked my life).

Very serious addiction (and an alcoholic at the time also). Always chased losses and could not get over that he once missed a VERY big win by just one goal in overtime that was too long by a mistake by the soccer referee.

I can feel the need to chase losses and I had a hard time quitting when losing when I played poker more seriously, so part of his addictive genes are passed on.

I have to stay away from casino games and alcohol but have discipline and good bankroll management in poker and sports betting.

It is almost some sort of situational irony that I have earned more money on different kinds of betting and poker than I have on any "regular job".

Even with my family situation, I'm totally against the rules and regulations the Swedish government has implemented.

With no bonuses, no rake-back, and not even freerolls allowed it some sort of collective punishment just to try to stop a small number of gambling-addicted people.

And you just can't compete on equal terms anymore. Plus bonus hunting and matched betting are impossible if you don't buy accounts from someone living in another country.

I think you have some similar restrictions in germany.

Everything in life is a combination of genes and inner and outer environment.

There are worse victims of several kinds of addiction as you know.

Both me and my dad are at least still alive - strangely enough, considering the lives we have lived.

My dad is now 83 years old and finally sober (and without money to gamble).

It is truly limitless.

Your story is interesting. The paths are limitless and we cannot understand or judge each path.

That is why we should never envy other people. We do not know what they really went through to be where they are, and often what for some would be a blessing for others sometimes seems like a curse, or a way for the universe to make up for losses.

My theory - a big part of the driving force is that the person did have good luck and was dong well for a while. Probably driven in large part at the time by good in-game decisions and discipline, as well as luck. The person felt that they were on top of the skill/luck curve. That their skill and innate ability was responsible for their wins. This was probably when they started moving up to higher stakes against more skilled opponents. Then their wins began turning into losses. Unsure how to deal with this, their decisions became less considered. Their discipline less firm. But their mindset was already locked in. This 'temporary' setback was all due to bad luck. They have the skill to overcome this. But they never do.

A key part of the continued spiral is that they don't have someone they trust, respect and admire who can help them see what's really going on. Someone they will listen to. Help them back off the ledge.

Excitement. This is a feeling that, in my opinion, is highly addictive. But excitement for disciplined players is motivation, but excitement for bingo players is a disaster :)

I heard my grandmother always say that a wish come true is the most valuable thing in life, perhaps this thought is in the mind of those who continue playing even when they lose.

Probably all of the 3. Also addiction involve dopamine release and each time you need to play higher stakes to have the same “good” feeling that you have playing lower stakes.

They are addicted and always think they will win the game. But they are usually too emotional and have tells up the wazo.

Everyone probably has their own reasons. Someone wants to bounce back, someone just wants easy money, someone wants to have a good time and is willing to pay for it. The reasons can be different, but the result is usually the same, the loss of money :)
Anyway, money is not the main thing in our lives, the pleasure we get from the game can actually be worth much more :)

We must honestly admit that more than half of all poker players are losers. I don't want to offend anyone, but I'm basically stating a fact. So, the most important thing is to understand what makes losers losers. First of all, it's a lack of patience, discipline and skills. What makes such players come back and lose money again and again? I think they come back because they want to get rich quickly and easily through the game. They are driven by greed.

I would choose option number 3 - I like the atmosphere of the game and the adrenaline that poker gives.

For many players, poker is a lottery. What makes a person buy a lottery ticket again and again??? .... Of course, the chance to win, to get rich quick.
