The mass shooting in Vegas was unthinkably tragic and vicious. Many innocent people lost their lives or were wounded because of this insanity. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and their relatives and close friends. There were also many heroes that day, and I offer each any every one of them my profound respect and gratitude for risking their lives to help others. I wonder though what it will take to stop these recurring and worsening events from happening. This man was not known to be psychologically unbalanced that we know of, at least not in a clinically diagnosed way. Time will tell if his spouse, friends and neighbours knew better. He had no known terrorist leanings or affiliations. He seems to be what they call a lone wolf. Clearly something made him crack. There are lots and lots of people in the world who contain their grievances in private. Many suffer but resist expressing their anger, controlling their urges to thrash out and do something horrible. Many have supportive family and friends that can and do help them. But some, for whatever reason, choose to accumulate a private arsenal to effect revenge on the society that they feel has alienated them. Sound familiar? Doesn't this sort of misguided revenge seeking violence happen every day on a smaller scale in the inner cities across America? If we can't systematically identify these people in advance, and report them to authorities who will be able to take appropriate, swift and decisive action to prevent a tragedy, then what can we do? It would be great if the causes could be identified and eliminated. If that can't happen, what can be done? It's pretty obvious to anyone that wishes to see. Get rid of the guns. Without guns people looking to hurt others will have to get close and personal. Far fewer people will have the courage to attack on a one-to-one basis. Those that do will be able to do far less damage. The gun culture in the United States makes no sense. These toys for men are being used to wreak horrible damage on society on a daily basis. The original premise, to have an equipped and ready 'militia' to protect the people no longer holds validity. There are organized, trained and equipped police forces at every corner of America whose mandate is to protect the people. Many of the 'militia' groups are now considered to be white supremacist or terrorist groups themselves, not protectors of civilization, but enemies of civilization. The 2nd amendment currently exists to protect them, not the law-abiding, peaceful people. Get rid of the guns, and gun violence goes down, a LOT!
