Hand reading means assigning our opponent a range, which is consistent with their actions in the hand, and what we know about their tendencies. It does not mean putting them on a very narrow range or some specific holding. Playing against a wide range is not limited to playing against maniacs. In heads-up poker both players will often see the flop with a very wide range. And in tournaments with antes there is a lot of SB open limping, and this is again usually a very wide range. In this particular situation the most important implication of his wide range is, that he will have flopped trips more often, and he will have top pair or an underpair to the Q less often than a GTO player. He will also have total air more often, and therefore it is reasonable to check back the flop and allow him to bluff and also limit the amount, you can lose, when he has trips. So I like that part of the hand, but the potential issue comes on the river, when he bet full pot again. Ok but you say, that he won around 400BB, before he left the table. Presumably this must mean, he won many big pots at showdown, and then again presumably most if not all of these pot bets were for value? Which is why, its important to pay attention to, what a non-standard player like this actually show down. If he was constantly bluffing or overplaying marginal hands, and got called and had to show them down, then he would not have been up 400BB most likely? Unless you have seen him do something similar with a J or total air then yes, you should fold AA, if he bet pot on all 3 streets. This is fundamental game theory. We defend less against big bets than small bets, unless we have information and want to exploit an opponent, who we think is bluffing to much or overplaying hands, we can beat. Let someone else make the first hero calls and pay attention to, what he show down against them.
