Discouraging Draws?

Here is the situation. It's the first hand of the day. I'm posting the BB to get right in. So I get a great flop! Straight!! SWEET! So I put a $1 bet into a $2 pot and get called. He was getting 3-1 to call and hit his flush draw. Now the odds on the flush draw (after flop) is 1.86 to 1. So it was a very easy call for him.

So my question is what do I bet here? I have a made hand and want action, right? To discourage the flush draw I'd have to bet $4? Is that right? Seems like a gross overbet to me. Guess I need to pay attention to my opponents pot odds just as much as mine!

Well talking strictly pot odds, he would need exactly 4.22:1 to draw, but factoring in implied odds, 3:1 is plenty for him to call. (he only needs to make $1.22 or more off you on later streets to justify his call).

The point is that he didn't make any bets back, and didn't make up for the bad pot odds.

Your bet was fine since you didn't pay him off, though a little more wouldn't hurt (~2/3 or 3/4 the pot). Congrats on winning some sklansky bucks
