What's the best HUD for a STT?

Also, does a HUD just use your own hand-history to load data for other players, or does it access a huge database of hands?

The most common two are Hold'em Manager and Poker Tracker 3. They just use your own hand history :)

There are sites you can buy hand histories off, but I'm fairly sure that is considering colluding and you may be banned.

Both PokerTracker and Hold'em Manager have free trials, so you could try them both out and see which one you like better. For other HUD's, you need to check with the site's TOS to see if another HUD is permitted or not.
