It seems that fewer and fewer casual players are being allowed to play just for fun online. The games are getting more complicated, it seems that everyone is now learning and the atmosphere can be a bit tense. Have you noticed the same trend? If so, what do you think was the reason for it — and can poker still be hospitable to newcomers?

I think FUN has already vanished from tables. Excitement is still around though.

I think access to information keeps getting easier, so learning the fundamentals of the game is more accessible than ever. This means you’ll run into competent players even at the lowest stakes.

100 NLH full ring was something that new players often started with when I began online.

And you often had 4-5 players seeing a flop.

The chat was always full of insults, comedy, and people just having conversations about poker (and sometimes sports or everyday things).

Today, it's almost like high stakes.

Now on pokerstars:

Tight

TIGHT, TIGHT, TIGHT.

Almost all REGS.

Very little, if any chat.

it has always been like this and it will continue to be like this, to stay afloat you need to develop, but there are still plenty of bad players

Yes, people are playing like computers these days, too many solvers and all.

I think it depends on the room. Rooms with others resources (like Sports and Casino) generally has more recreational players. My preffered room is 888 and there's a lot of fishs there :)

Been gone for many years now. There use to be a lot of chat on almost every table back in the "golden age of poker". Now days one can double table for 8 hours a day and never see anyone have any good chat on either table. No ever chats anymore and if they do it's just garbage, bs and complaining. I miss the days when one could chat for hours with guys/girls about all sorts of interesting topics.

And then there was the constant bad and loose plays and calls. Pretty typical to get 3-4 callers every hand even when raised/re-re-raised.

Cheers!!!

I think it all depends on the beginner. Playing for money cannot be ‘hospitable’. But if a beginner is ready to learn, analyse, and most importantly, devote his time to the game, then in a few months this beginner can get good results.

Speaking as a casual player returning to the game after a long break, I usually log in to PokerStars using the mobile App, and I suspect most new players do the same. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see much in the way of tools that allow me to directly interact with other players. I can annoy them with silly animations that throw horseshoes or snowballs at other players at the table, but forget about table chat.

I just figured that was to limit bad behavior you see so often elsewhere on the Internet. :cautious:

People still play full ring tables? Most sites don't even have them.

Yes, fun players are fading - sites favor regs, and GTO bots scare casuals away. Still, soft spots exist if you hunt for them.

Yes, I’ve noticed the same thing. Poker has become more serious, even in the lower-stakes games — it feels like everyone is studying and analyzing now.
But I still believe it's possible to keep the game fun and welcoming for beginners, especially in communities like CardsChat.
The key is finding a balance between learning and enjoying the game 👌

complete nonsense. I don't want to offend our forum members, but even among us there are a lot of bad players. Ok, even if you play for fun, why not learn tactics to play better? And if opponents in other tournaments are indifferent to me, for ours I sometimes feel Spanish shame, because forum members are a little like family or something. P.S. I am grateful to the administration for our freerolls, it so happened that for 3 years in a row I did not have money for my birthday, and for 3 years in a row on the last Saturday before my birthday I take top1 70 dollars. It turns out that Cardchat paid for my 3 birthdays, for which I thank the admins with all my heart, THANK YOU! You are all in my heart, but I need to develop - play better, even if I win less often, but let it be an interesting battle!

Hmmm.... I watched most of a League game last night. It was exciting, "hospitable" in my opinion, and I certainly thought it was "fun". There was lots of good natured chat, including from the spectators (of which there were usually 7 or 8). Not "tense" at all. While the "fun" may be disappearing elsewhere, Cardschat certainly seems to be doing their best to make it enjoyable for all players, new or old and everything in between.

In fact, maybe that's why Cardschat exists in the first place. To put the fun back in the game. Just saying. :)

Never actually thought of phones being a reason for lack of chat nowadays. I don't play from my phone so had no idea phone's don't offer chat. Always been laptop/desktop for me. I have animations turned off.

Yeah having table chat isn't always good as there is always one clown with bad behavior around. With that said back in the day table chat was mostly pretty and it was interesting talking to players from other countries and learning about their country, where they lived and stuff.

Cheers!!!

Poker is not very welcoming to newcomers, and to understand this, you need to leave this status. Unfortunately, all newcomers come with the mindset that they will become rich, but they leave very sad.

No- at least on the sites and games I play there are lots of 'fun players' and also newcomers(for example on 888 we can see the MTTs earnings in the built-in hud...), what I agree with most of the members that posted above is that the average poker player is a lot better nowadays than in the past and this is because of the many tools that can help players study the game and get quite good at it pretty fast.. but, if we study more and always improve our poker game- we'll stay ahead of most of the field as recreational and even bad regular poker player won't put enough time into study... IMO, ATM, poker is doing quite well both online and live (y)

This ^ is great!

But I think the OP is meaning something slightly different when they refer to fun players. 'Fun players' is commonly used to describe 'weak recreational players'... ones who just 'play for fun' and don't take the game too seriously. (also known as 'fish', 'donkey', etc.).

Personally I find winning to be 'fun', so for me when I'm winning I am a fun player! :)
(I'm going to head back to the tables right now for some more 'FUN')

I beg you!!!! The guy went on the turn with a pair of jacks against my kings and on the river he caught his 4.5%, he doesn't think that he was incredibly lucky, he just sees that he won! There is a meme in the Russian community: "poker has two years left to live" like in two years there will be no fish, to be fair this meme is over 15 years old
