There are too many factors that affect on my decision about bluffing on the river: my opponent's style of play, the number of opponents in the game, position at the table, my stack size (as well as my opponent's), the stage and importance of the tournament. But I don't have a specific rule about bluffing. I like to use creativity in poker.

Before having to bluff on the River I try to get the other person to retire after betting on the flop and the turn, if after that they don't give up I don't like to bet even though I've been all in with color projects that didn't connect, but if it's a hand that neither of us bet on I like to bet the pot to represent a half pair on the river.

I like to size my bets so that I've left myself approximately a 'pot-sized bet' on the river... then if I've told my story & feel it is going to work a decent % of the time, the chips are going in.

Bluffing or giving up on the river depends on several key factors. You should bluff when your story makes sense — meaning the betting across the hand convincingly represents a strong hand — and when your opponent is capable of folding. Bluff more often if you block the likely strong hands your opponent could have (like holding a high card that would complete their possible flush or straight). Bluffing also works better if the board texture is scary (e.g., a third flush or straight card just hit). On the other hand, give up when your opponent is a calling station, when your line doesn’t credibly represent strength, or when you have no relevant blockers or equity.

I have a rule. I only bluff when I am sure that my opponent is weak. Otherwise, I don't bluff. In order to understand what to expect from your opponent, you need to watch the game carefully and analyse the actions of the players. In the course of the game, if you are attentive enough, you will develop an understanding of what you can expect from your opponents.

If you’re playing low stakes, bluffing the river can be a mistake. It’s like a win win for the hero caller, if they call and are wrong, they just muck there hand and no one sees how bad there calling hand was. If they call and are right, well here comes there dopamine hit “great call wow” lol. So maybe just go really big, enough to put their tournament life in jeopardy if you bluff.
