I think a small bet (1/4-1/2 pot) would either win you the hand (if he was bluffing), or force him to raise all-in. The difference now is that he would be raising you to go all-in - making it much less likely he's bluffing. That would be the information I need to fold your hand. Of course, having said that, If I had to call/fold in the situation you were in on the river - I would call, both from curiosity, and to show the rest of the table that I won't be pushed off good hands - even if they lose sometimes.
