TOUGH BREAK I feel your pain - and no, I don't think you played it badly, although folding is always an option if you think you're beaten. You flopped trips, and someone flopped a boat. It sucks, but it happens occasionally, so I wouldn't sweat it too much on that count. However, I don't think I would have called this one down to the river, mostly because of your kicker. While it is unlikely that the other 8 was out there, you have to consider that anyone raising to you when you bet on the paired board either has the other 8, or is holding a good PP. If they have the other 8, even on a "random" selection of the other card they hold, the chances are they have a better kicker than you. Your flop raise was good. I don't like checking the turn, but it's not wrong to check it here - its more of a style/habit thing for me, as I never allow free cards, unless I'm already going to fold. You should bet the river, though. after raising the flop and checking the turn, you're practically screaming "slow play," and I think your opponent pushed all in with a fair certainty that you'd call. I think a small bet (1/4-1/2 pot) would either win you the hand (if he was bluffing), or force him to raise all-in. The difference now is that he would be raising you to go all-in - making it much less likely he's bluffing. That would be the information I need to fold your hand. Of course, having said that, If I had to call/fold in the situation you were in on the river - I would call, both from curiosity, and to show the rest of the table that I won't be pushed off good hands - even if they lose sometimes.
